BUG Review
This hostel recently relocated to a more central location, and is now set up in an old motel. It is still undergoing renovations, but what has been done looks promising. The bathrooms need some new fittings and the communal kitchen is tiny and messy. A few of the dorms have kitchenettes and they all have en suite bathrooms. They have a nice big internet café, a nice swimming pool and laundry facilities. There are plans for a new outdoor common area. Hopefully this place will see some intensive maintenance in the near future so it can live up to its potential.

CRAP service!!!, August 6, 2008
Reviewer: NIT from WA, Australia

Pros: nothing, the free dinner meals are tiny-smaller than a kids meal size!
Cons: was extremely unprofessional~

Went in to ask to hold a room and they'd asked for credit card details to "hold" the room and said nothing would be charged to our credit card unless we check in. Ended up getting a message from them that we didn't cancel the hold so they were unhappy and charged our credit card anyway. Very unprofessional.

I stayed here for 2 weeks after a bad experience at another hostel. It is a good place to stay and i met some great friends there. Staff are really good and the free meal is also good. The only bad thing is the nightclubs on the the weekends, it can be loud if you have to work in the mornings like i did but i kind of got used it.

The worst hostel i have stayed in, December 3, 2007

This hostel is by far the worst hostel i have stayed in while travelling the world. The room was dirty with U shaped beds, they were bent in the middle so far i got a sore back. The free meal was a voucher for a bar 10-15 mins away and the meal was more of a childs sized meal than a hungry backpackers. The breakfast was a couple of cheap frozen loafs of bread and some cheap jam. During the evening the manager actively encouraged loud drinking games outside the rooms meaning i couldnt sleep. I also found the manager to be very rude if something wasnt his own way. One of my friends asked about bed bugs and the manager went of at them even tho they weren't accusing his hostel of having them. I would never reccomend anyone to stay there, Townsville has much better hostels and closer to the city centre.

Creepy atmosphere run by control-freak manager, December 3, 2007
Reviewer: keiron_9 from Whitehaven. England, UK

Pros: The feeling like you've been swimming in oil after a dip in their pool!
Cons: The atmosphere, management, bedroom locks, showers and kitchen.

When I arrived in Townsville I booked for a week in this hostel as it sounded OK from the review in my guidebook. However from the moment I got there I realised it had a weird atmosphere. My first two nights were spent in an ok 3 bed-dorm. On my third day I was rudely woken up at 10am in order to involuntarily move rooms. The room I was abruptly moved into had a dodgy lock, so none of our keys would let us into the dorm! The management put a note on the door telling anyone staying in the room not to bother them with this, as if you kept trying your key (for about half an hour) they would eventually work. I was also kept awake most nights by all the drinking games that were instigated by the manager himself.

As for the facilities, it seemed that the kitchen was never open as it was always being cleaned (although you couldn't tell) and the showers were really low down, had ridiculous power and were scalding hot. Fine if you want to burn a hole in your waist, not if you wanted to get clean! Free breakfast was frozen bread that looked like someone had danced all over it and the free evening meal was a baby portion served in a pub 15 mins away, you actually burnt off more food walking to the pub and back than you gained from the meal!

From what I've heard, my stay was a particularly good one in comparison to others. My advice, stay clear of this hostel, and it's management. There are much less distressing places to stay.

We arrived here on a sat afternoon from Mission Beach where we had a great time we were picked up by the hostels mini bus (along with a group of girls that hadnt pre booked). My boyfriend being the gent he is let the girls check in first. When it got round to our turn we were told in an abrupt manner that the 4bed dorm we had booked for 2 was only booked for 1 and was more expensive than we were told over the phone. No apology was offered for the mistake. We decided we would take the "last 2beds" in the hostel in seperate rooms on the promise that we would get the room we booked the next nite (we booked for 4 nites). As i climbed the filthy stairs i got an increasingly worse feeling about the hostel. When i opened the door to my room all i could do was cry it absolutely horrendous!! There was a tree growing through a window with leaves practically on the pillow where i was supposed to sleep!!! There wasnt even a clean space on the floor to put my rucksack!! We went to see my boyfs room which was not as bad but was still quite dirty!! It was a male dorm so i couldnt swap with him!! We went back downstairs to inform the manager of the state of the rooms and to ask why neither of the rooms we were given was the 4bed dorm we pre-booked.He quite rudely told us go else where but wouldnt give us a refund!!! We found other accomodation after walking around in the hot sun for 2hrs!!!! We felt very ripped off and poorly treated and i strongly reccommend you dont stay here or if u have to ask to see the room before u pay!!! Worse hostel in Australia!!!!!!

Hi Guys, I stayed at Globetrotters towards the end of last year (06). The only way I can describe it is as appalling. The rooms were dirty (as mentioned by someone else below, the room was covered in dust which played havoc with my asthma), management rude and unhelpful, and to top it off many of the rooms have bed bugs!!!! Luckily I had only paid for 2 nights up front so left and moved to another backpackers located around the corner, which incidentally was the best backpackers I stayed in throughout my trip of Australia. It was here I learned that the current manager of Globetrotters had only recently taken over and was basically letting the place run down, I was also told I wasn’t the first person who moved from Globetrotters due to Bed Bugs!

Conclusion: Townsville has some really nice hostels but unfortunately Globetrotters is not one of them, it fell short in all three aspects I usually rate hostels by – cleanliness, hospitality and atmosphere. Please do yourself a favour and avoid this place.

If you are reading this review thinking this is somebody who has had a one-off bad experience please think again and do not visit this hostel. It is a health hazard. If you are lucky enough to have a bed that is not festooned by bed bugs the size of large ants (a sign they have been around for long enough to get that big) and fail to notice the filth lining the carpets, fans and bathrooms you might just feel the miserable atmosphere surrounding the place, of the travelers that are feeling the bite in the night. It is not a nice place to be as I found out but around the corner is probably the best hostel I have stayed in on the East coast called the reef lodge. We were rescued by them and they spent a whole day helping us fumigate our gear to get rid of the bugs - which we later found were much harder to get rid of than imaginable. The experience in globetrotters needn't be yours but if you find yourself there - already paid up I suggest that you put up a good fight for your money back and then run for the hills.

Just wanted to stress how much we did have a problem at this hostel. I would'nt normaly bother but we were so shocked and dissapointed by it that I am putting a 2nd review on bug. I have read the managers reply, he did swear at me and the place is horrible. The WORST hostel in Australia we stayed in during our 12 month trip, so we've seen a lot of hostels! I hope that the game has been raised and the hostel is being cleaned now, I hope the beds are new with no bugs, I hope the toilets have been worked on and I hope if you do go stay there you wont regret it like we did.

Hostel Manager's Right of Reply

The only truth in this malicious review is that there was some dust on the fans. To say that it was an inch thick, gives you an idea of how much this person exaggerates and stretches the truth. In any case I offered to have the fans cleaned for her but this was refused by the guest and her girlfriend so I refunded them their money for the next night. I did not swear at her although I felt like doing so after the way she spoke to me. As for organising a piss up in a brewery, quite often I do take my guests to “The Brewery” in Townsville for some discounted drinks. So again, incorrect! Globetrotters is not closing and will continue to offer quality budget accommodation to backpackers, 99% of whom are delighted to stay here and it is a pleasure to have that 99% who enjoy their stay.

4 of us checked into Globtrotters this week. Big Mistake! We are vip members and got a double for $55 and our friends got the room next door for $57. You'd think the price of the accomodation would ensure a clean and friendly place to stay. WRONG! The photos on Globetrotters website are very mis-leading, maybe that's what it was like before but definatly not now. As for the staff, the only helpfull girl had only worked there 3 days so far, the 2 guys Ben & Darren couldnt orginise a piss up in a brewery. We got sworn at by the boss Darren because we wernt happy with the state of our rooms, there was dust an inch thick on the celing fan (not too high up to reach) and had never seen a hoover before. It seems we are walking dollar signs, not guests, its all about getting in the money as the place is nearing closure.

I was in Globetrotters last weekend and arrived late at night. Check-in was friendly. I got to my room and 2 of the girls were talking about having gotten bed bugs the night before. I went to the office and voiced my concern, and their response was that it would be fumigated the following morning. They also said for me not to say anything to the other girls, because I would start a panic and everyone would want to leave. If it hadn't been so late at night, I would have left, but I didn't know where anything was in Townsville. Sure enough, I got bitten, as did the other 6 girls in the room. But it was fumigated the next morning, which didn't do much because the 2nd night also yielded more bites. Thank goodness I was only there for 2 nights.
