Clean, Great Staff and Reasonably Good Atmosphere!, October 14, 2008

I stayed overnight at Adelaide Central YHA at the end of August, 2008. I have never stayed at a backpacker hostel and was hesitant when first confronted with the idea. However, after checking in and going upto my room I was extremely surprised to discover how modern, clean and spacious the "share room" was!

All beds were provided with a doona and sheets as they do not allow sleeping bags in rooms to avoid 'possible bed bugs.' Hearing this I was extremely happy as it assured me that YHA Adelaide Central take pride in their cleanliness and are thinking of all backpackers, both present and future.

The common room was huge and filled with numerous couches, tables and power points to plug in your laptops! It also had a pool table, table tennis table, and had about six computers with internet access.

The common room was connected to a large, spacious kitchen with about five different cooking stations.

The YHA Adelaide Central was in a great location within Adelaide city. Transport, shopping, supermarkets and restaurants were all within walking distance and easy to find, although all staff were more than happy to assist with any questions!

The atmosphere at the hostel during my stay wasn't as I’d first imagined it would be. I thought it would be full of loud, outgoing and energetic people. However, all other backpackers there were quiet and kept pretty much to themselves. Talking to the staff they mentioned that for Adelaide the peak 'backpacker' time of year was around February/ March as that's when most of Adelaide's festivals and events were held.

Overall, my stay at YHA Adelaide Central was an enjoyable and pleasing one. I have definitely changed my perception of backpacker hostels, for the better. If the opportunity was to arise again I would have no hesitation in staying at the YHA Adelaide Central.

Clean, Tidy, Well-Maintained, Great Place to Chill Out, October 14, 2008

The YHA Adelaide I feel is a great place to stay. The cleanliness and overall atmosphere of the hostel was of great standard. After staying at the YHA Sydney which is of excellent standard, I was not expecting this YHA to be equivalent. As a result, my expectations were not very high. However, I was shocked at how modern, expensive and clean the hostel looked and was pleasantly surprised.

Personally, I did have some issues with the layout of the building as it is very easy to get lost as all of the dormitory areas look the same and I found it difficult to remember which level I was on. Luckily, there were only three levels with the common room on the second. It is crucial that the common room is in an easily accessible place and I found that this was the case with YHA Adelaide. The common room was a meeting place for all of the travellers and it was easy to see that most where mingling between the gender, age and race groups. This created a worthwhile, sociable atmosphere which most backpacker hostels should have.

I found the staff at the YHA, especially Richard and Tania, very welcoming, friendly and laid back. There are a number of specials and deals happening in the hostel everyday so there was always something to do. If I had more time, I would take part in as many as I could. I was very impressed with the standard, cleanliness and layout of the dorms. The kitchen I also felt was of great standard.

There are not too many recommendations that I can make towards the hostel as I was very pleased with my stay.

Overall, I was very pleased with the facilities offered at the YHA Adelaide and will certainly stay there again. YHA Adelaide is a great place to stay, relax or socialise depending on what sort of backpacker you are – YHA Adelaide has it all!

It was a great place to stay close to the heart of the city with information about available offers., October 13, 2008
Reviewer: jessat from Australia

Pros: It was very clean and well maintained. There was a number of computers for internet access.
Cons: There was no flair or creative atmosphere, not many group activies so backpackers were more isolated

The YHA was a very well maintained place to stay in if your seeking a simple atmosphere. The facilities were very clean and the staff were reasonably friendly but kept to themselves. They had a wide range of bulletin boards advertising current specials and also where locals or backpackers can advertise job offers, sales, etc. I would highly commend the YHA for their organised approach to the layout of the area, but i thought it lacked authenticity. The place needed creativity and flair as it remided me more of an office than a hostel.

The entertainment areas were great especially the table tennis and pool table as it gave backpackers the opportuinity to mingle and meet eachother. Even though the backpackers can manage meeting other people in the hostel, I didnt really notice any planned group activities such as a tour or a night out for anyone interested. This would further encourage the formation on relationships between visitors.

Overall i think it was a great place to stay if you are looking for a simple, clean hostel that provides basic facilties, but i look for creativity and interest in a hostel where there are many chances for everyone including the staff to get to know eachother which is what the YHA could improve on.

I stayed at the YHA for one night with my tourism class. As i had never been to a hostel before i wasnt expecting much but when i arrived it was the total opposite of what i was expecting. It was tidy and clean in all areas of the hostel. The common area was very spacious and had all new furniture. This area had a tv room, games room, pool table, table tennis and a outside balcony. Also in the common room they had a board with nightly activities that you could win prizes and interact with other backpackers. I stayed in a doom with three bunks. The room was a good size and had big lockers to store your bags. The bathroom was also very clean and kept in good condition. Overall the YHA was a great experience even though lots of people kept to themselves making the atmosphere dull it was a great hostel to stay in.

The YHA is great, but from what I saw from my one night stay it can be a little quiet. The kitchen facilities are great, good showers and the common room is a good place to relax.

On the 28th of August, I stayed at the YHA Hostel on Waymouth Street with my tourism teacher and my tourism class. This hostel was way better than I expected. The location was central and fantastic. I liked the atmosphere of the YHA….it was mind-blowing. I liked the idea of a common room where we can meet other people. I stayed in a 3 bunk bedded dorm with my classmates. The room was quite a good size and very cosy. The best features of the hotel were the friendly and helpful staffs, great central location, Large open kitchen area and plenty of facilities. There are quite a number of evening activities such as pool table, table tennis, board games and a movie room to keep all the backpackers happy. Overall, it is clean, well equipped with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It provides an outstanding value for money.

My husband and I stayed in a double room with a private bathroom for 4 nights in July 2008. Of all the hostels we stayed in on our trip, this ranked at the top of our list! We loved Adelaide in general, but the hostel specifically was in the perfect location and was very clean (and I’m usually quite picky about this). The front desk staff were not always the friendliest, but they were always able to at least answer my questions about how to get places! I’m not sure how the overall “atmosphere” would be for people traveling alone and wanting to meet others, but for a couple, this place was top notch.

I stayed in this hostel for 2 weeks, and although it has quite a quiet atmosphere, I found it to be well run and very clean.

The rooms are clean and looked after, and there's the added bonus of having a light on each bed. Always good when you're in a big dorm and don't have to turn the main light on.

The TV room is quite small, but the common area is spacious and there are enough computers, so that you don't have to wait very long.

The kitchen is amazing. It it huge, and there's so much space to cook whatever you want to.

The bathrooms are also big, clean and there was always hot water.

The only problems with this hostel, is that like all the YHAs it is quite expensive, and this one seems to be for older people, and there never seemed to be many people there. I don't recommend it if you are looking for a party hostel, but if you want somewhere to chill for a couple of days, then this is the place. The location is also good as it is close by to pretty much everything.

A very good YHA. the atmosphere is typical YHA - what they lose in atmosphere they make up for in facilities. The kitchen is the best we have seen - lots of cookers, plenty of dishes and pots/pans. a lovely communal area plus extra rooms for tv/reading etc. Excellent internet - fast with lots of terminals. Would recommend to anyone - great location in the CBD. Only downside is that it seems to be used by families as a cheap hotel.
