We just visited Cannon Street Backpackers early September 2006 for 6 days. I would like to let backpackers know what to expect if they stay this month & hopefully it will only improve as we get closer to summer. Expect Special on Private Rooms durning Sept. $40 double this year anyway Expect to be close to public transport however no pickup service from hostel Expect Great Travel agent and pleasant staff Expect Clean private room Expect Clean bathrooms in morning until backpackers dirty them up Expect hot showers however dated Expect Toast & Coffee or Tea for breakfast but get there early as greedy backpackers take all the milk and bread that is suppose to be for breakfast ( no one monitors kitchen) so best in best dressed Expect network for computers to break down often and there is no one in evenings to fix them however they will give you your money back if you can't log on. Expect NO APPLE PIE AND CREAM Expect NO FOOD AT RESTAURANT AS IT WAS NEVER OPEN Expect BAR NOT TO BE OPEN EVERY NIGHT LIKE THEY ADVERTISE (IT WAS OPEN TWICE WHILE WE WERE THERE) Expect the answer to your questions why none of these things are available and you will be told there is not enough people wanting to use these facilities. WELL NO ONE ASKED US! Now I don't have a problem with any of these things not being available as it was a cheap place to stay. However please don't advertise this stuff as a draw card for people to stay at the hostal if you can't deliver the goods. Be honest say these things are available sometimes. Then you will keep your customers expectation low and whatever they do get will be a bonus. To bad. I would have liked to give this hostel a better rating especially due to their fantastic travel agent who helped us organise our sightseeing in adelaide. That was a perfect experience.

I stayed at Cannon Street Backpackers for about a week in mid-May 2004. Pros included a decent smoker's lounge downstairs with a pool table and table tennis, a laid-back pub next door and friendly and helpful staff (Dan and Jen rock). There were two kitchens - one small and one decently spaced main kitchen; it seemed adequate when I was there, but I don't know how cramped it may get in the summers when it's busy. Cons included a grimey men's room and coooold rooms (the tiny space heater they provide, if they do provide one, don't really help as you huddle under the covers while wearing two sweaters trying to fall asleep). Free breakfast consists only of toast with jam and coffee. Also, reception is only open between 6am-8:30pm, so if you have a problem or get locked out besides those times, you're screwed.

The location was convenient, since Central Market and Chinatown (cheap eats!) is a block away. It is in a quiet and safe part of town, on Franklin Street, but is only about a 5 minute stroll away from King William Road, where the hustle and bustle are. And the free Central Loop Bus is across the street if you don't feel like walking; it'll take you to all the main sites.

The atmosphere was friendly and quaint - it was easy to meet people especially since there weren't an overwhelming number (granted, I stayed there at the beginning of the winter season, so most people were heading to warmer places like Alice or Perth). Many of the staff were fellow backpackers so most were fun and of a similar mindset. The permanent staff were friendly, knowledgable and quirky, which made for good conversation. Generally, it gave me a more down-to-earth feel than some of the more regimented hostels like YHA.

Finally, the free apple pie is divine. True, it's just a slice of apple pie, but it's like a party every night at 8pm with everyone waiting in line for the good stuff. And when you're a backpacker, anything free is cherished.

This hostel (like Melankas in Alice) is owned by Adventure tours. I know because I stayed in both of these and did the adventure tour as well. You wonder why Oz Experience and A.T. can only book you accomodation here- it's because the money goes straight to them! And it's not even good! It was really 3rd rate and noe one cars about you unless you wwant to book tours because that is how they get more money. You should stay somewhere else and just go to the bar although there's much better places than their empty bar but the barman is quite cute. a friend of mine stayed in city backapckers only it was now called Annies Place. They have one in Adelaide and Alice and a tour company(Mulga tour) too but they will stilll drop you anywhere. i saw her hostel- it was great! so if these guys can do it why can't Adventure Tours/Cannon Street/Oz Experience/Melankas get it right? Their big enough!

So stay somewhere smaller and avoid the "team" above else you won't get the best value or the best fun.

Jo Tantum is iether staff or paid very well for her pathetic attempt in trying to make this "very poor excuse for accommodation" sound reasonable. Has anyone else noticed the amount of one star reviews? For the love of God they are the real, authentic reviews. The staff smoke around the reception area and most of them think they are way to cool for skool, a homeless person would rather sleep on the concrete than on the shite excuse for a bed, toilets are filthy, the bar is your typical backpack bar with no originality whatsoever and that chick in the tour booking section needs a bullet for being so rude to me and my boyfreind - if you dont like backpackers asking questions, get another job dear! How does this place sucker so many to stay here?????

If you stay here, you can like me study the finer points of the great Australian Bed bugs, They let you have them for free, cool, next time I want to break out in red rashes in places I can't say on this review I will stay there again, I told there staff of the bugs and basically got accused of bringing them into the hostel, A good welcome to Adelaide, the place is Shiet, it is dirty, they should be able to buy a toilet brush from the supermarket, They got their furniture off Noah before the Ark rotted away,

Of the 2 dozen hostels I stayed in while travelling around Australia, this was the one that convinced me to stick with YHA rather than independent hostels. The rooms were barely big enough to fit the 2 bunks into (so very little space for baggage) and felt like a prison cell. The toilets were covered in graffiti and were unclean. The showers were basic and rusting. In the 2 nights I stayed there I really could not bring myself to use them (which is unfortunate if you then have a 20 hour coach trip heading north to Alice springs ;-)). The woman in the travel shop was unhelpful and surly. Therefore, I went to the YHA nextdoor to book my tours and to kick myself that I had not booked into the YHA afterall. If you are reading this and will be staying in Adelaide - You have been warned!

This hostel was dirty, cold, and it took me a week to get over the bites from the bed bugs, on the other hand the bar was ok,

At first the hostel looks good, but the rooms are like prison cells, everything is very old and it was by far the dirtiest hostel i've visited. I turned up on a sunday afternoon and the bathrooms were absolutely filthy (someone had even been sick on and around the toilets) we reported this to the staff who said that it was a weekend and therefore wouldn't be cleaned regularly. It was still like it when i checked out a day early the next morning (at10.00) and again the staff did not seem bothered. The YHA next door is the same cost and very clean with excellent facilities. After I had checked in at the YHA, i saw other people moving across from Cannon St.
