Note that this lodge has one dorm (the rest of the accommodation is motel-style) but backpackers are actively encouraged (the place used to be listed in the LP but inexplicably was dropped). I didn't actually stay in the dorm here, as there were so few guests that the owner kindly upgraded me to a double room for the same price ($25). However I used the bathroom and kitchen facilities, and they were outstanding. Though many people don't seem to realise this, most of KI's attractions are at the western end of the island whereas most of the accommodation is at the eastern end - since KI's size always catches people out, you can spend large amounts of time travelling backwards and forwards if you base yourself in Penneshaw or Kingscote. With rental car insurance not covering driving between dusk and dawn (justifiably - the roads are alive with kangaroos, possums, etc during the night), you can't afford to waste your daylight hours stuck in a car. Also, some of the rental agreements are NOT unlimited km. This is another great selling point of the Timber Creek Lodge - it's bang in the middle of the island, so you're well-positioned to see everything without wasting either time or km.I can't really rate the atmosphere as there was only one other person staying there (it was off-season). However there was a common room containing a pool table so during busier periods there would be opportunities to meet other travellers.
