BUG Review
The Pickled Frog is an older building in the south western end of the city centre. It has a good atmosphere in the common areas, which include a lounge with a big TV, a pool table and a cosy nook for reading. There is also a bar next to the reception area with cheap beer. However furnishings are old and worn and the accommodation upstairs shows its age and could be better maintained.

The Pickled Frog is great for a short stay and to meet loads of like minded people. I loved the large front room with the open fire place and cheap bar, its a great place to relax. The Staff at the Frog in true auzzie style are really chilled out and laid back and happy to help you with anything you need. We even went and played five aside football at the gym opposite with them! The rooms are extremely basic but if you are with your mates it doesn't matter and the noise never bothered us. The bathrooms also are fairly basic but clean and there are places to hang up your stuff. Make sure you get to the free brekie early, its always a bonus to get that included. It is in a good location, about five minutes walk from pretty much anything. I came in July so it was quite quiet but in the social area everyone is lovely and there is plenty to keep you occupied. I reccomend to come to the Frog with your mates and perhaps not alone as the rooms are a little intimate! If you don't mind roughing it a little but up for a laugh, go to The Frog. 'Hi Gary'!

worst hostel so far. price is cheap as, but they were painting are room when we were there..also filling in the holes in the wall with plaster..and we got curtains on our last day...? the place is so cold. the communal area is freezing, apart form one fire place in main entrance. showers are poor, and only 2 in female toilet. avoid if you can

The Pickled Frog is not the cleanest backpackers around, but it offers original, friendly, quirky, happy and lively atmosphere that really outrules any bad reps....

I love the big open front room, cheap beer, plenty of people to yarn with, and cheap as internet is great. There are also booths you can sit in out the back, really it just feels like a big shared house. The staff go out of their way to make you feel at home and at ease.

Hello Gary - I hope you make it to Ireland soon....

I'd expected more from the pickled frog after reading the rave reviews. the hostel's a good 5-minute walk from the wharf area which is where you're most likely to be heading for your meals. doesn't seem far, but it's a pain walking back after a long day out and about. the room was very basic. it had only one light hanging from the ceiling. the pillows were practically non-existent. there were lots of people staying at the hostel and believe me, you can hear people about even with your door shut. you'll be up as early as the first person walking down the corridor. the kitchen's small for the number of people staying at the hostel and it looks dirty. there's also only one washing machine and dryer, both of which were in high demand.

on the plus side, the hostel is just behind the transit centre. the staff are friendly and happy to help. there's also free brekkie, just make sure you don't go down past 8.30 (breakfast ends at 9am) or there won't be anything left for you. there's a great laid back, campy atmosphere at the place too. there was a basin in my room and the toilets were clean with dry areas within the showers to hang your stuff. and there's cheap internet.

So its not the palace of your dreams, the thing The Frog delivers is the atmosphere. The staff are laid back and want to help, theres stuff to do when it rains and the subtle and quirky nuances will bring a smirk to the face.

Thats it check it out. Oh yeah they like a drink I tell ya !

I booked this one because of the reviews I read on this website, so I actually expected a bit more...

The very good thing about them is the friendly people (Rod is cool), but honestly I think the bathrooms are very very basic, and the 3-bed dorm is way too small for 3 people, especially if you don't know them.

For me it was OK as I was sharing with just one (very friendly!) girl, but there was definitely no room for a third one. (a bunk and a normal bed).

But the free brekkie is one other good thing too (corn flakes + toasts)!

As for the location it's all right, 5 minutes from the airport shuttle bus, 10 minutes from the center.

In short, go there for just a few days in Hobart, unless you don't care for the bathroom comfort (I might be soft...).

The staff are really friendly, laid back, helpful and fun. There is free breakfast every morning which was fab! The rooms are clean and as quiet as you'll get in any hostel. The kitchen/fridge is very large with everything that you will need & the free shelf was well stocked. As the owners and a lot of the staff lived on-site, we felt secure. The CBD is only 5-10 min walk away with the Transit centre just around the corner. The building (an old Bavarian pub) and murals throughout were cool. It was a great location as we were so near the pubs, but not too near and close enough to Coles and Safeway to get cheap and varied groceries.

It's the type of place thats busy but there is always a wee corner somewhere to get time-out by yourself, think it helped that there were different rooms. The bar and open fires are so good. There was always something going on and we met so many nice people. We came to Hobart with so many things we wanted to do and ended up doing hardly anything as we were so content and met so many nice people and charachters at the hostel.

We were going to stay at the Nerada but after hearing so many bad reports about it and meeting the owner of it we were glad we didn't.

Thank you for the warm welcome and memories to all the guys at the Frog, we miss you.

We had a nice stay here, though the accomodation is pretty basic. The bathrooms are ok and clean linens are supplied. If you want a blanket, you can rent a doona for $3. We went in August 2003 and it was cold! There was a space heater in the room and with the doona, we were warm once we were under the blanket with the heat on. The mattresses and pillows were stained and in poor condition but there were no bugs and everything seemed clean enough. The staff was very friendly and laid-back. Guests get discounted drinks in the bar area and the internet was very cheap (though only available when reception was open). I never used the kitchen but it looked clean enough walking by it. The location is ok, not much open on this street at night. There is one bar/club down the road with great drink card specials and good music that was open late. Overall, I would stay here again.

We stayed here for 5 nights and it was excellent, cheap internet for guests. The location is excellent, right near the transit centre and city centre. Free breakfast and discount for YHA and VIP. Say hi to Viv for me if you go.
