BUG Review
The Halls Gap YHA is a very nice purpose-built hostel that is well equipped with brand new facilities. It was architecturally designed to be environmentally friendly and it is tastefully decorated and kept very clean. There are two quiet lounge areas, each with a fireplace; a TV lounge; internet access including Wi-Fi ($6 per hour; Global Gossip) and a big fully-equipped kitchen. Guests have free use of bicycles and there's also an herb garden and fresh eggs every day. Security is excellent with lockers in all the dormitories.
Price Dorm bed $29 ($26 HI/YHA) Double/twin room $72.50 ($65 HI/YHA) Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
Pros:
Sustainability, comfort and doing the planet a favour
Cons:
A little out of the way for non self catered meals

This is one of my favourite hostels in Australia. It was designed as a purpose built eco lodge and features loads of comfort and many world class energy saving features. The Grampians is a fantastic area with extensive bush walking, a major aboriginal cultural centre and its half way between Melbourne or Adelaide. The hostel has a sophisticated but laid back feel. If you are not an experienced bush walker be sure to see the National parks information centre for maps and advice to suit your interests, fitness level and time. Be careful of fires and stay tuned to local radio in the warmer months. A major fire occured here 2 weeks after I stayed here: but fires are a natural part of the Australian bush and cause amazing regeneration and renewal to many plants. So like most natural hazards be aware, take care and you will be fine. Fresh & supermarket food options in Halls Gap are a little limited & pricey: stock up in Stawell or Horsham before you get here if you plan to self cater but there are nice pubs for meals a couple of km away from the hostel.
