Pros:
The Spencer is small and homely. It's got all the facilities you need.
Cons:
The floors tend to creak a bit.

I checked into The Spencer after walking up from the bus station following a crappy overnight bus trip from Adelaide. The place was neat and tidy as I walked up to reception. The receptionist was very helpful was able to put me into a six bed dorm straight away. I was a bit dubious when I walked into the room as it was quite messy (bloody backpackers. Such slobs). There were five other slumbering bodies. It was still early so I jumped into bed and took a nap. I was awoken by the sound of a hoover next to my bed as the staff set about cleaning for the day. The bathrooms were basic but clean and the water was hot. The best thing about this place are the common areas. They have a really cosy tv lounge with comfy sofas, and the kitchen is on the rooftop. You get great views as your eating. Actually, it's probably one of the best kitchens I've seen in a hostel in Oz, although the fridge could do with a clean out (bloody backpackers. Such slobs).I don't have too many complaints. The floors do creak a bit but that's forgiveable as the old building is full of character. The staff are friendly and helpful and the price reasonable. All up, one of the better hostels I've stayed in.

Poorly maintained lower floors and an ill equipped kitchen on the top floor. Is overrun by long term residents, and there seemed to be a different person working in reception each day, who often couldnt help with any questions about Melbourne. On the plus side it does offer free parking and have great views from the fire escape. Inexpensive but not value for money.
