BUG Review
Elephant Backpackers is a clean hostel with good quality facilities. It features new bunk beds with real mattresses, and a downstairs common area with a TV lounge, kitchen and Internet access. The main drawback is that the rooms don't have ceilings -- the walls are just partitions and you can hear people several rooms away.

Price
Dorm bed $20
Single room $35
Twin room $50

Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

Reception Open
7am-10.30pm

TV lounge Kitchen Laundry

Odd hostel, no ceilings, no pans, not a lot to recommend it, August 12, 2007
Reviewer: callump from Scotland

Pros: the rooms are clean and well maintained (apart from the ceilings)
Cons: The kitchen/ common room in the cellar is awful

I cant recommend this hostel Im afraid although the staff were friendly.

The Kitchen/common room in the cellar is a poorly lit hole with very limited utensils there was literally one pan that you could cook a single portion of porridge or noodles. The furniture is in a poor state of affairs and there is no covering on the rough concrete floor.

The bedrooms although clean tidy and well equipt suffer due to the lack of ceilings meaning you can here everyone talking, all the alarms in the morning and the air conditions or heating units.

All in all I'd say take the time to go to a high quality hostel out in St kilda and dont go for the nearest one to the tourist information

This was the first place I stayed at when I came to Australia in December 2005. I stayed for over a month and spent Xmas at Elephant backpackers and every single person went out that day to have a bbq in the park. Every nationality and age. Its got friendly staff, comfy beds and you get used to the noise. Its in a great location as well on Flinders Street.

As spelt out above, this is a terrible hostel to stay in - the worst I've visited. The major problem is noise due to the lack of roofs on rooms, though small room size and bed lengths also added to its lack of comfort. Location is a redeeming factor, opposite Flinders St station and close to Federation Square.

ive stayed in some really bad places in the world but this takes the biscuit. my double room was next to the toilets not that it made a difference as you could hear people turning over in bed at the other end of the hall. no roof, thin walls, crap kitchen and poor tv room. best thing was leaving!

I agree with everything the previous reviewer wrote. I booked a single room hoping to get away from the noisy dorm situation but was not to be. Not only can you hear the people from a few rooms away but the building is situated on a major street as well as being across the road from a train station! BUT apart from the noise everything else is good for the price you pay. The rooms are spotlessly clean, comfy but small beds, share bathroom. But if you do intend to stay consider getting some ear muffs

This hostel is very overrated! My friend and I had a twin room, but it is better to book a dorm because you will be sleeping in a dorm anyway since all of the rooms have no real ceilings. There are very thin walls of 2 meters high and then you will find an open space for 3 meters untill the ceiling. You will hear every person going to the toilet, taking a shower, talking in their rooms etc. Not only the noise is annoying, but also the lights in the corridors that stay on the whole night. Expect very small rooms, although the beds are good. The kitchen is also very small and there are no windows in the hostel.
