BUG Review
The Flinders Station Hotel occupies 11 floors of a building in the city centre, right down the street from the train station. An institutional feel prevails, but the Flinders is reasonably clean and well kept. There’s a large kitchen and dining area and a couple of TV lounges. The common area includes table tennis, a rarity among Melbourne hostels. Internet access including Wi-Fi is available for a charge. Security features are good, with lockers for every bed and key card access to the building and rooms. The connected bar next door, The Joint, is usually hopping until the wee hours of the morning.

This is a great little hostel tucked into the corner of Elizabeth of Flinders Lane. It has a fantastic location - a few minutes stroll to Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and the Town Hall, close to twenty-four hour McDonalds and pizza places and supermarkets, with trams running along Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street.It's been recently decorated and has some interesting murals on the walls. Rooms are clean and well-maintained, with extremely comfortable beds and fresh bedlinen. (Although fellow shorties beware - these beds are high!)It has a good atmosphere - lots of people around, basic free breakfasts (toast and cereal), TVs, communal areas, things like that. The seating can be a little run down (there were tears in most of the couches), but is quite comfortable.There are a few downsides - due to the presence of two bars, including a twenty-four hour one, it can be quite noisy, and the noise filters up when you're trying to sleep. And I had quite a few issues with the bathrooms - late at night, they can be positively disgusting and incredibly unhygienic, and the showers aren't brilliant. (To be fair, I've yet to find a hostel with decent showers.) Still, they're minor downsides.Probably the best option if you have $20 or less a night. If I was restricted to the same budget as I was last time, I'd stay here without hesitation.

Stayed here 4 2 months and was very impressed with everything, pukka kitchens, nice showers etc... just like a hotel if u know what i mean.
It was perfectly located in the centre just by the flinders st station, ideal 4 us lot who like the brew! joint bar every day till the sun comes up ha ha ha learn by my mistakes dont piss all ur money up the wall!! ha ha ha then u'll have to work doh!

Stayed here in an ensuite room for 3 weeks in Feb 2007.
The staff here couldnt be more helpful and friendly - everything i needed was sorted out for me. I couldnt be more grateful.There is a 24hr bar for residents "the joint bar", and another bar "the green room" in the basement.
You are in a perfect location in the CBD - right next to the major tram lines, and there is a 24hr pizza place, 24hr Coles supermarket, 24hr Subway, and 24hr Mc Donalds within meters of your doorstep. There is also a bottle shop and an ATM at the entrance to the Hostel.The internet is pretty good here, however you can get much cheaper at the cafes at the other end of elizabeth st near the Q.V markets, and the kitchen was well equipped and pretty clean most of the time - having a complete blitz each sunday.There are bbq's here each friday - depending on the weather, and bands play here a lot. The Joint bar also has a great balcony over-looking Elizabeth St and flinders Station.The rooms are pretty clean (and im fussy!) but are starting to look slightly run down - dust, marks on walls, bleach stains on carpets etc, but if you want somewhere clean then you will be fine here.I didnt see the shared bathrooms while i was here so i cant comment on them. I used one of the 2 laundry facilities a few times while i was there and theyre pretty good value for money at $2 for a wash and $1 for the dryer - you can even buy 1-wash bags of detergent at reception for 60c which is cool.You have a swipe card system for your room, and you can only access the floors of this hostel where the rooms are if you have a card to swipe in the lift, or at the access doors on the stairs. At night you also have to use your card to enter the building so it is pretty secure. There are also lockers available (quite cheap) just off reception if needed.I would have no problem staying here again!

This hostel was the perfect base for my stay in Melbourne, I found that the night staff were very friendly and the daytime ones perfectly alright. I ended up becoming good friends with a couple of them. The hostel is not exactly packed with facilities but it's clean and well maintained and there's always someone about who's up for a laugh(piss-up)! It's location is perfect and the bar on level one is trendy and relatively inexpensive. I disagree with people that say this hostel has no atmosphere because I found the complete opposite in the month and a half that I stayed here.

Me and my mate were intending to stay for only a few days but ended up staying for 2 months. The communal area is great, free DVD's , free breakfast and heaps of cheap beer. The staff are great, cooking a dinner every monday night for us

The central location of Flinders Station Backpackers is definitely worth the price. I paid for a week in a 4-bed dorm and it only cost A$118. Flinder Street Station is half a block down the street, where you can catch most trains and trams, including the free City Circle tram that takes you around the city. Federation Square is a block away. A Coles Supermarket is conveniently located across the street. There aren't really many restaurants close by, unless you take a 10 minute walk over to Chinatown.The hostel itself is decent but not overly impressive. My particular dorm room reeked - the smell was of a hobo who hadn't bathed for months. I resorted to buying a can of air freshener and spraying the room down each time I entered. There are individual lockers for you to padlock your gear. Being that I stayed in the beginning of winter (late May/early June), the rooms can get quite chilly. You must also bring your keycard everywhere you go as you cannot access facilities like the bathroom or elevator without it. The kitchen, located next to the lounge on the 3rd floor, is spacious and clean, with a walk-in fridge for all your groceries. There is also a TV there so you don't get bored eating your meals.There is only one lounge, located on the 3rd floor, with a main TV on one end of the room and another TV hanging from the corner in the other. Depending on the type of person you are, the lounge could be fun and inviting or a nuisance. Being that it is the only lounge, most backpackers congregate here and is a convenient place to meet people. Everyone also seems to get immersed into whatever is on TV, so everyone usually shares a good laugh together. However, being that it is the only lounge, it may be difficult getting peace and quiet to yourself when you want a space to chill. Also, it is a smoker's lounge, so if you don't smoke or don't want your clothes smelling of nicotine there really isn't anywhere else to relax besides the kitchen. The dryers in the laundry rooms are terrible - my laundry had to be dried 3 times, which was costly and time-consuming.Reception is located in the bar on the 1st floor (actually, it IS the bar) above a liquor and wine bottle shop on the ground level. I didn't find the staff to be terribly friendly and were not keen on answering questions. When the bar is busy, it may be a few minutes before you can get someone to assist you, and when you do, you have to shout your questions to them.The location and price were great, but the hostel itself could do with a few improvements.

under my bed..is dirty.need a good vacum..noisy, very bad beds,the kitchen is dirty..no place to reast..shame..is very handy..in the city..could do better..

Well located right in the city centre, rooms good, bathrooms clean. Best part was a huge common area and the TV lounge. Kitchen is well stocked and big enough to fit others in, plus the walk in fridge was a bonus !

I stayed @ this hostel in 1999 it was the best hostel i stayed in Aussie .The staff are really freindly (We where invited the the managers 30th birthday party )and help us find work in the city .Great location try the $5 all you can eat chinese up the road

I give this place 3 stars because it got everything you need: big kitchen (and clean), TV room and small dorms. The lockers on each room are fantastic! You can store all your stuff there!The TV room is very, very un-cosy. big TL-lights, stupid computer games (never used) and no colours at all. It's too big. The other TV in the kitchen (!!) is very boring as well.But: it's very well located, in the hart of the city, it is cheap, a bottle shop is in the hostel, and a 24 hour supermarket is located 1 minute from the hostel! That makes sence!
