BUG Review
Melbourne Connection is a small, affable hostel right down the road from the Southern Cross bus and train station. There’s a cool, relaxed vibe here. Facilities are rather basic, with a little kitchen and dining area, and a pair of TV lounges. Dorms feature real spring mattresses, and there’s a locker for each bed. A bit of art on the walls livens things up. There’s an alcohol ban throughout the hostel, but Melbourne Connection still manages to maintain a friendly, social atmosphere. Wireless internet access is available for a fee.
Price Dorm bed $20-29 Double/twin room $65-85 Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
Credit Cards American Express,Diners Club,JCB,MasterCard,Visa
We all expect different things from our hostels and some of the other reviews surprise me. There has been a change of management recently and the guys there now were great. Free pasta night, quiz in the basement bar, loads of DVDs, took us to Ramsey St and to the Aussie Rules, ( I would never have gone onto the MCG playing surface if I hadn't stayed here, even hads a kick for goal after the match) Hostel clean friendly and very easy going, made friends quickly, not the quietest but in my experience, quiet means boring.

I have recentley stayed (Jan-2005) for 10days.Locations: Just perfect. 2 minutes : from SKYBUS terminus so this take care of your travelling need from the Airports2 minutes : from Spencer/Flinders Stations and various Tram Lines - You are connected to the CBD and other city locationsSecurity: adequateYou get a door key when you check in / please bring yr locker (lock and Key)We had a good understanding (dorm 4 person) ; when going out lock the door.Hostel Itself:No Smoking and No drinking policy (in the hostel)I stayed in a dorm (4 persons) : U receive clean sheets / pillow cover and blanket on arrivalLocker's which are a bit narrow (so you cannot push yr back-pack in it - is a bit of a problem - anyway I used to keep a small bag which contain some valuables)Toilets: Were cleaned daily / (hot/cold water available)Kitchens: Were cleaned daily You have plates / mugs /gas / coffee /sugar /cereals on the house - bring yr own milk/eggs/pasta etc.. and cook a good hot meal.TV: Fox connections and Video library.Management: Bruce/other folks found then friendly, co-operative.All in all its a nice place to stay (economical) ; I had made good friends so the stay was more pleasant. I would reccommed especailly for the Location and also its nice / clean and friendly environment.

If you are looking for a clean, friendly, quite hostel thats close to local transport, inside the cbd district, a block from the skybus airport shuttle for those early morning get aways then look no further than the melbourne connection hostel. With other amenitys on offer, free foxtell to keep up with worldwide sport, free internet on arrival, video libary for those wet days, laundry on sight, and friendly knowledgable staff who know the area like the back of there hand.A helpfull booklet was on hand for things to do in melbourne, as well as all the local beaches, bars, and trips that where available, including car hire companys, they made my stay very easy and i felt i didnt miss out on anything, including sports events, firework shows, and all the festivals from jan-may.As well as doing there job the staff are active in taking out groups from the hostel, melbourne cup day, pool nights, bowling nights, and go-karting, as well as all the trips down to the local bug bar, which brings the guests closer together in this small idealy placed hostel, which is minutes away from elizabeth street. This is my third summer at the connection hostel, and compared to some hostels and yha's ive stayed at i rate this one very highly.

The Hostel is OK, and a decent place to kip - but will never win any awards for it's facilities. The rooms are very clean and tidy - never a spec of dirt anywhere - unlike the bathrooms which will make you shudder, with rust and mould around the windows. Its also a fair treck from the centre of town. I timed it as a 15 minute walk from Elizabeth Street, and that is past the dodgy strip bars on King Street. There really aren't any good bars nearby, so a night out means a long walk. However the small, boxy, TV room DOES have sat TV, and there is the free tea. The staff are fine, but the lack of reception in the evening is a pain. The big problem with this place is noise - the slightest cough in one room can be heard in the next room (walls are paper thin, and the false ceiling means that the top of the walls doesn't go over them. Also all the rooms downstairs open off the main kitchen - so if anyone is up late, you will have to be too. Worse, last night I was forced to stay up to 4.30am listening to someones great party in the next room. Music pumping... so a complete sleepless night. I'm not impressed. Probably thats why there are signs everywhere with rules on no booze and no music... but the party orientated guests don't seem to notice that all that much.In general it's OK and cheap-ish, but the general consensus is that if you are after a good nights sleep - or be close to the action - go elsewhere. If you are after a glowing review from the owners... read below.

Had a great stay here, the fact the hostel is small encourages friendships between guests. Office was open from 8 am till 9pm at night, great staff, breakfast was included along with free Tea and coffee, there was also free video hire and satellite television.

I stayed here in July of 2002 for a week. Had quite a lovely experience there. The staff were quite friendly and helpful to all my needs since I had just arrived in teh country and was travelling alone they treated me well and booked all my tours for me and dealt with the tour operators when I had a problem with one of htem, it is definitly a quieter hostel if thats what your'e looking for, a lot of long time people staying there so not as social or party atmosphere as some places, but I found everyone staying there quite nice and met some great people. So if you're lookin for a quiet place or long term would definitly reccomend it.
