BUG Review
This large 210-bed hostel is a great accommodation option, although its location is not as good as the other St Kilda hostels. It is very clean and well maintained with new fittings and comfortable beds. The bathrooms are squeaky clean - yes, they really squeak! The big ground floor common area has a kitchen, pool table and internet access ($4 per hour) including Wi-Fi and there is also a laundry and a nice courtyard barbecue area. This hostel features a big secure parking area that makes it a top choice if you're driving.

Cooee has to be the best hostel that I have stayed in on my travels so far.

The rooms are large, the beds, comfortable, and not every hostel can boast having a t.v both in the living room and in the kitchen! The bathrooms are clean, and have enough showers so that you don't have a long wait in the morning. The bathroom floors however, can get extremely slippy, and therefore quite dangerous.

The reception is manned 24 hours by very helpful, friendly and easy going staff. The place is kept immaculately clean by around the clock cleaning staff.

The atmosphere at the hostel is very easy going. This isn't a party hostel and is quite quiet compared to other hostels that I have stayed at. However, it is located within a short walking distance of the main St Kilda bars, and a short tram ride to the city, making the 'party', so to speak, in easy reach.

All in all, I have no problem at all recommending this hostel to any backpacker, because for me, it was like a home away from home.

This is a newer hostel that has good facilities and location near St Kilda Beach. However, it is near a street where tranvestite prostitutes hang around and harass guests going to the hostel.

There are also several dodgy, shady "guests"(usually drunk) staying at the hostel that harass and physically assault other guests as well as stealing other guests' belongings-cellphones and cameras.

I personally witnessed a guest minding his own business that was kept up all night by some "long term" "guests" there who also physically assaulted and threatened the guest after he asked to keep their noise down and not block the door by throwing their stuff all over the room.

When the guest asked staff to do something after he was threatened and physically assaulted, the staff refused to kick out the guests acting in a criminal manner.

The staff also admitted physical assaults, drunken behavior harassing other guests was routine at the Couee hostel and to ignore it or find another hostel.

I was also told by other guests that their cellphones and cameras were stolen and staff coud care less about it.

When I asked for a partial refund due to other drunken guests keeping me up all nite, physically assaulting and threatening me(refusing to evict the "guests" threatening and assaulting me and other guests) the staff just ignored me implying this was a typical thing for hostels and if I didnt like it that was my tough luck.

They also allow certain guests to leave their garbage all over the lounge area on a regular basis.

The building itself is nice but I strongly advise people not to stay at this hostel due to the poor management allowing several drunk, dangerous guests to threaten and assault other guests and steal their valuables.

Even though I and others told staff they should evict certain "guests" for their criminal activity at the hostel we were consistently ignored.

Cooee was the best hostel we stayed in - we travelled the east cost and topped it all off with the best hostel in Melbourne!

It was more of a top end Hotel than a motel or hostel. We had a double with en-suite and it was gorgeous. Lovely white fresh linen/ clean towels and nice new bathroom with hot shower and fully air conditioned or heated !The room was spacious with a flat screen t.v on the wall (and a remote) we had a big bed and lots of storage space.

The kitchen was great has a giant flat screen t.v and hobs/oven/3 toasters/2 microwaves/kettle, big fridges and lots of tables to eat at.

There is a big t.v lounge and games in the front reception. They have about 10 computers with Internet and lots of trips to go on.There's a courtyard with lots of new out door seating. There is'nt a pool but that didnt matter too much !

The beach is just a short walk and so are the cafes/shops and food stores. You can get the tram into Melbourne and that takes about 20 minutes or so.

A lovely place to stay would definatly go back !
