I recently returned to Australia from a short 2 week trip to Austria visiting my brother whom I hadn't seen in a long time. We travelled to Bad Gastein in order to carve up the powder on offer and stayed at the Euro Youth Hotel & Krone based on his previous summer experience there.

Having always been an hotel man and not a hostel regular, I had my doubts as to the quality of accommodation he'd decided on given the lowly 27 Euro/night triple share, including breakfast. When we arrived as were greeted by Bianca, I was already beginning to like the place. Upon entering the room, I thought my brother had it all wrong - this place is definitely hotel, not hostel. Yes, there is dorm room accomodation, but we had a triple room including on-suite (towels/soap included) and great views of the mountainous terrain. We threw a few tubes of beer onto the balcony to chill and went for a quick walk into town to scope the place out.

That evening (and every other one!) we dined in the restaurant. Ivan is a great chef and the advice provided by Phillipa on meal choice was top notch, not to mention the Augustiner Weizen washing the food down. Treat yourself and go the lamb if it's on offer. Other staff I came in contact with, Sven and Elan, were also fantastic people who were comfortable sitting down chatting with patrons.

The other points which increase the value of staying here are:

* Spar Next Door * Felsentherme a couple of minutes walk * Skifields across the bridge 100m away * Train station also 100m away.

In summary, do yourself a favour and check this place out if you're planning a trip to the area. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I know 100% that when I next visit my bro in Austria it will be winter and we'll make another trip down to Bad Gastein and the Euro Youth Hotel and Krone.
