I concur 100% with Anonymous from Canada´s review below. We also had high expectations of this place, booked 3 months in advance, yet we were also stuck in a room in the dreary house - which smelled musty and the toilet had not even been cleaned after the last occupant (who had left us a nice surprise...) The bed was the most uncomfortable I have had since starting our trip. We turned up to the nice main house for breakfast the next morning only to find there wasn`t room for us so we had to wait for the main house guests to finish first! If I had known in advance that I wasn´t in the main house I definitely wouldn´t have stayed here, so Frau Linder, if you´re reading this, I suggest you start being more up front with your guests about the location (and standard) of their accommodation. And other potential guests...I would ask where your room is before booking it!

After reading such amazing reviews and looking at the beautiful photos of Haus Linder, we were both very excited to stay at this hostel. We fully expected it was going to be one of the highlights of our trip. But in fact, Haus Linder became our greatest disappointment! Although we had booked well in advance, when we arrived she gave us a room not at the beautiful Haus Linder (or even a room at Haus Christine operated by her sister) but a room in a dreary house off the main property which was shared by other rented tenants. Our accommodations were terrible. It was furnished with old 70s furniture in varying states of disrepair and our bed looked nothing like the beautiful beds with the fluffy pillows shown in the pictures. Our bed was an old pull-out couch which only had sofa cushions as the mattress. Another shock was the shower. It worked only once, on the first night (by worked I mean it was a trickle of frigid water). We tried religiously for our entire stay hoping that the shower would work. but it never did, we didnt shower for three days. I am sure Haus Linder is very nice if you are lucky enough to actually stay there - it looked nice when we walked there to pay our bill and it sure looks nice on the internet! Just be warned, if you book a room at Haus Linder there is a chance that you might be staying there and a chance that you might not be showering for three days!

Haus Matilda was full, so she put us in withher neighbour, who was so friendly. The rooms were nice, the bathroom was modern, the shower was powerful, and we were up in the beautiful hills, a train or bus ride from town, but no big deal. Breakfast was fine, and the lady we were with was so helpful at recommending things to see etcGreat place!

This hostel truly is worth five stars!!! ...Better looking than most peoples homes, this hostel provides relatively cheap but excellent accommodation with a picturesque view to match!!!The bedrooms, toilets, bathroom, kitchen, dining room, external terrace etc... are all supremely clean but with a quality feel you don't get in (any) hostels!! You will not and cannot be disappointed with this hostel!!! The owners are really friendly too... what more can you ask for? ...Okay, with every happy story there's always gonna be a down side... this hostel is on a hill!! ...So unless you have a car whilst in Salzburg... you're gonna have to do a bit of up-hill walking (5-10mins)!!! It really isn't that bad if you consider yourself to be slightly fit but if you're a bit of a pie eater then you're better off staying at another hostel in town.... The hostel itself is located about 3min train journey out of town... it is an effortless journey but not ideal. I think with this hostel you need to compromise... the more accessible town hostels with the view you'll be getting at this one... I'll have to say it was worth it!!

Perched above Salzburg, Haus Lindner (Matilda's) was absolutely fabulous. Matilda picked us up at the train station. Our room was perfect - a balcony overlooking the mountains, "whipped cream" pillows (very fluffy), a yummy breakfast with the family, a friendly kitty (Flo or something like that)...the list could go on and on.The only thing we found a bit awkward was that our guide book (lonely planet) said cooking facilities available, and they were, except it's the family's kitchen and a bit strange using it...the fridge was packed. We asked Matilda if she had The Sound of Music, and she borrowed it from her sister and put a TV in our room! Very kind. A great place, not to be missed.Although the walk up the hill was a killer, we got used to it after 5 days...and we took the bus into town, not the train, because the bus is more frequent and convenient - only about another 5-minutes walk from where you get the train.

This place was absolutely perfect! Despite the big hill you had to climb to get to this place, it was very quiet, the rooms were superb and we had a private balcony and view of the alps! The price was reasonable and it does not take long to get into town by local train. Breakfast was included.

Excellent accommodation in one of three houses owned by three sisters. Incredible views over Salzburg and the nearby mountains in a village outside the town. Excellent rooms, free use of a "family" bathroom. Excellent breakfast and friendly owners. Only downside is getting to the place, fine if you have a car, not too bad if you have interrail (about a train an hour), Frau Lindner will give you lifts to the railway or pick you up if you ask nicely!!!!
