had a great time here. yoho has a great location near the station and the mirabell gardens. staff are friendly and helpful. the bar gets nice and lively in the evenings.

the only thing that bothered me were the lack of hooks in the shower cabins. i had a terrible time trying to keep my stuff dry when showering.

otherwise recently renovated and looking good.

cheers

Will not be going back, January 28, 2007

We stayed at Yoho's last week (January 24th) for one night.

Firstly, the location was excellent, between the train station/main bus depot and the town centre. A quiet road and was easy to find from the map we had.

We had stayed in other 'Europe's Famous Hostels' on our trip - Euro Youth Hotel Bad Gastein, Balmers Interlaken and Euro Youth Hotel Munich, which were all excellent. They were fairly expensive hostels but we couldnt fault them in any way - clean, good facilities, great atmosphere, great locations. Yoho had a lot to live up to and it failed miserably. We actually couldnt believe that it was given this great status at all!!

There was no luggage room to keep backpacks if arrived early, or leaving late. We were leaving later that afternoon and had to leave our bags at the bottom of the stairs. Needless to say...we worried about them for the rest of the afternoon.

We struggled to sleep that night, the temperatures outside were well below freezing, and they felt the same inside our room too. We were given a clean sheet and a blanket was on the bed in our room, which don't get cleaned between guests. We were astonished considering Salzburg gets temperatures below freezing every winter!

Staff were hit and miss; some were helpful but most were just rude. They were more interested in socialising with each in the bar than actually doing their jobs, you would have to wait until they had finished chatting before they'd serve you.

The best example of their unprofessional behaviour would be when they would play the worst Eurotrash music you will ever hear at top volume, so that a conversation you would be having would be drowned out by the staff singing and cheering. The hostel and staff are not as internationally friendly as the place suggests, especially when the staff turn the music off to watch austrian 'pop idol' in the bar.

The un'Happy hour' (50 cents only off the cheapest beer?!?!) was 6-7pm but they didnt serve food till after 7, and only for an hour!

So, despite the hard beds, dirty blankets, cold rooms, broken lockers, no breakfast, crap bar, worse staff, and lack of secure luggage storage, it's ok for a one night stop over if you get there late and leave early!

Nice place located about halfway between the trainstation and the tourist center. Easy walking distance to both. The hostel is easygoing. Known as a party hostel but that's only the bar. The dorm area is quiet and peaceful. Secure and clean... although the showers could use some work and I didn't go in for the co-ed toilets.

As far as the bar goes it's one of the best hostel bars around. Sometimes you have to make a choice between a party hostel and a quiet place to sleep but YoHo manages to be both. Great place.

I stayed nearly a week at YOHO and had such a fantastic time. The staff are young, friendly and helpful, and there is such a great vibe to this place. There are always people up for a chat so it is easy to socialise (esp if you are travelling on your own), plus the staff organise things like movie nights and walking tours so there is always something to do. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Showers are lockable and conveniant. Only downside would be you need pay (1 euro) each time you open your locker which sucked. No kitchen facilities but they have great, cheap priced meals (And drinks). Highly reccommended for a great stay :-)

We had an absolute ball at this hostel and it has made some good memories! It's clean, the staff are friendly and extremely good fun once the night kicks in. The bar downstairs is great and at one point we were dancing on the chairs and tables without being told to get off. If you want a good time I would definitely suggest to stay here.

After 3 weeks in Europe and time to reflect I can honestly say that Salzburg was my favorite place to stay! (This opinion might be a little biast b/c I met someone there and had an amazing night!) Anyways, my friend and I arrived in the morning at the train station and it was about a 5-10 min. walk to the hostel. When we checked in we booked the Sound of Music/ Lake district tour and headed to the lounge to watch Sound of Music. Our rooms were nicley decorated and roomy. The whole hostel was colorful and clean. After the tour- which was so much fun!) we headed back to the hostel for a reasonably priced dinner. Even though it was a Sunday we found lots of open bars in the city center. Unfortunatly we had to leave really early the next morning for our train and I didn't have a chance to exchange contact info with my new friend. So Pete if you're out there please email me! Anyone going to Austria, make sure you stay at this hostel! It has a friendly atmosphere and the staff and bartender were really nice. The town is a hidden treasure in Europe... go!

My friend and I stayed here in May 2005 and we were allocated a 8bed female dorm. If you are sleeping in the lower bunk bed, good luck to you 'cos you can't really sit up straight which makes it very uncomfortable. Shower facilities vary from floor to floor but there are basically few hooks to hang one's clothes and towel. Staff are not as friendly and knowledgable as I thought they should be. One of them did not know where the Eurolines office was and did not volunteer to help find out. We ended up going to the tourist office instead. While the prices are reasonably cheap, I would not consider it value for money considering Yoho is supposed to be a member of Europe's Famous Hostels and I have stayed in a few of those and trust me, Yoho has some work to catch up. In all, for someone looking for no frills, easy walking distance to the train station (7mins) and city (10mins), this hostel works.

I found this to be a good, clean modern hostel.

They let me park my motorbike in the small yard at the front. The bar is lively and good for meeting people in and card games were much inevidence.

They do serve food in the bar, but don't expect much from them - I think snitzel and stew were the things on offer. That said, I had the snitzel and it was perfectly reasonable.

The ice caves are worth a visit. It seems to be 30 for the trip and 15 entry. Be prepared for a trek though - around a mile and a half or so of walking to get there.

I stayed here last night. I woke up this morning in my unisex male dorm and found in the next bed, unfortunately in plain sight, a naked pair of male buttocks, limbs draped across a naked female figure in the same bed. When I went to bed at 23:30 all the beds had been empty. So, this seems to be a party hostel, loud music being played half the night in the bar downstairs. This is good or bad, depending on what you're looking for. It was Friday night, so this may have been an exception to the norm.

Accomodation prices are at least 2 higher than the official description above. I believe the 6-bed dorms are E18 each and 8-beds are E16.

Bringing your own food and alcohol on the premises is strictly prohibited, or so their signs say. This is because they have their own restaurant and bar downstairs where they sell you things at escalated prices. Their E1.50 "breakfast" gives you a roll, butter and jam, and a cup of coffee or tea. If you're like me and don't like coffee or tea then you're just paying for the bun. And this bun is a ripoff because you can get the same thing for E0.29 at the supermarket 2 blocks away, and some jam, butter, and a plastic knife for free at McDonalds (if you help yourself to their basket of goodies during breakfast hours).

Lockers are available for an extra fee only. They are coin operated, so you have to pay E1 eveytime you close and lock the door, or E0.50 if you are using the tiniest lockers i have ever seen.

My 8-bed dorm was extremely spartan. Just 4 bunkbeds and a garbage bin. No hooks to hang things, no table, no chair, no shelves, nothing. No ladders to ascend to the top bunk.

There are only 3 male showers ("for the moment", they say) for the whole hostel. They have deactivated the coin showers that people have complained about in previous postings, so you can currently shower as long as you want without paying more. :) You still must undress in the public area where the hooks are and then enter the private shower stalls, which are too tiny to have any dry areas to stash your things.

Most lights and faucets are motion activated. So it can go dark in the toilets if you needed to sit down for a while. Don´t bother bringing in any reading material! Last night in the toilets there were 2 out of 2 sinks with motion sensors not working, so i had to brush my teeth in the shower room. This morning one of the sinks was working, the other was not.

The internet at this hostel is 3x the price as the cafe around the corner (E1 for 10 minutes, compared to E2 per hour) and thez have just one terminal.

On the plus side, the location is very good, the place appears to be recently renovated, and the staff have satisfactory answers to questions about Salzburg.

Well,

as for the first hostel I stayed at during my trip throug Europe this place proved to be just what it should have been: Adequate rooms, good facilities, and most importantly - very, very social. Getting to know people here is the essence of this place's existence. Use the 'where are you from' majic words and see it happen by itself. It depends, of course, whether the other travelers are single ones (like those I was surrounded by when I was there).

*Close enough to the touristy centre. You came to walk, so unless you're disabled, stop complaining. 7 minutes isn't far.

*Very close to the train station.

*During the off season they have all kinds of promotions: Third night for half price if booked ahead, breakfast included etc. Ask at the reception.

*Do not, by any means, use their internet facilites. Step out, turn left and left again on the second street. Then look for the little turkish long distance telephone place where you can surf for 2 an hour.

*Take into account that Salzburg, being a touristy place, draws many Chinese and Japanese tourists, who tend to wake up at 6am. Try not to share your room with them, and if you are Japanese or Chinese - please, oh, please do not wake up at 6am! Let us sleep!!!
