I recently travelled around europe for 2 months, and this was by far the best hostel i stayed in. we found st gilgen (Zell am See) when we did the sound of music tour from salzburg. we liked it so much, we decided to stay there for a few days just to unwind. it was such a beautiful place. we shared our 8 bed hostel room with four other austrian girls. they were really nice, and were trying so hard to speak english. they showed us where the local nightclub was, and then we all ended up there one night, which was really fun. the room was clean, the bunks were wooden, very comfy and came with a nice doona and pillow. there was a massive bathroom with two showers and two sinks and a separate toilet. it was always kept really clean. there were locker facilities available too. the staff were really friendly and there was a really strong family atmosphere about the place. the hostel is located right opposite the beautiful lake. we went and had a swim and just relaxed there a few times. the atmosphere was just unreal. it was really good because there were no tourists around other than us. the tiny town was just so beautiful and unreal. they have a really nice icecream shop too! i would recommend st gilgen to anyone. i will definitely go back there one day.

14 Euros gets you a clean bunk with down comforters, sheets, and a nice down pillow and breakfast. Facility is on the lake, with patio. Breakfast is hearty. Meats, bread, jam, coffee or tea, all you can eat cereal with milk. TV room. 15 minutes from train station -- make a right while facing the lake and start walking on the path that follows the lake. Good access to walking trails and free bathing areas on the other side of town (DON´T PAY TO SWIM.) Only downside: 10 PM lock out unless you leave a 25 Euro deposit for the key to the main door. Staff very helpful. Institutional feel.
