I was very surprised about the location, as most hostels tend to exaggerate on their centrality. This hostel however lies exactly on the intersection of the two most significant metro lines of Vienna, and in a sensible walking distance to the centre and one of the largest shopping roads I've ever seen.

The predominantly young staff was helpfull at all times (even at night) which i can not report from other hostels in Vienna. The advice on eating, drinking and clubing proved extremely valuable for the duration of our stay. (12-16.3.04)

Breakfast was included in the price, with absolutely no limitations on refill!

Our room (3 people) was an 8 bed room. as i was with a couple, the elevated double bed was very willingly accepted by them, as this ensured a bit of privacy.

My summary:

The value for money in this hostel is just incredible, as there are absolutely NO extras to be paid. (locker, bedsheets, breakfast all included!)

My next stay in Vienna will definitely be at the westend city hostel.

This hostel was great! The staff was very friendly. The hostel offers opportunities to help you have a truely Austrian experiance. For example, you can sign up at the front desk to have an authentic Austrian meal or to attend an extraordinary Mozart concert. We did both and enjoyed both very much. The rooms were very clean and the bathroom looked brand new. There is internet access down stairs which was very handy and couches to relax. There also beverage machines too, which was nice. Its located a block away from the metro, and two blocks from the train station which was handy. It was really comfortable and I think it made our experiance in Vienna really great!

Clean, but packed dorms which has 10 people trying to shower at once! aint fun!..clean tho and near the station and shopping street, staff are rude, we booked in advance looking for a small dorm but where told take it or leave a 10 bed dorm. Brekkie is crap and 1 egg for a euro!! robbery!..

Westend is close tho but thats about its only perk!

My friend and I stayed here, basically because we didn't have any other options and it was right next to the train station. We were in a 10-bed dorm with one tiny bathroom to share that was located in the room. It was co-ed and packed!! Very crowded!!! The beds were made of unfinished wood and looked like someone had just put them up the week before or something. The shower was clogged and by the time I'd finished my shower, I was super close to flooding the floor because the water level had risen so close to overflowing the shower edge. I didn't find the staff to be overly helpful. They did provide sheets, and the breakfast was reasonably nice, but I wouldn't recommend Westend to anyone unless you REALLY need a place to crash or you just enjoy feeling like a sardine.

My friend and I were forced to share a bed about 1.5 times the size of the normal single beds located directly above the bathroom, while paying the full price (each) of a 6-bed dorm. Everyone else in the room had also paid for a 6-bed dorm and since eight people were actually in the room (the price for a 6-bed is a couple euro more expensive than the price for an 8-bed), everyone had been cheated. The staff were unapologetic and unhelpful in response to complaints. Also, while we were there, it seemed that many other hostellers had similar complaints (e.g. three rooms having to share one bathroom, etc.). I didn't have major complaints about the other aspects of the room (the cleanliness, the breakfast), but certainly wasn't impressed either.

Just returned (July, 2003) from a 3 week backpacking trip and unfortunately, this was the worst experience I had. The facility was fine as was the location and cleanliness. But I thought the staff showed incredibly poor judgement.

On two consecutive nights, very drunk and strange people were allowed into our room. The first time, the guy litterally turned on the main light and just stood in the middle of the room, reeking. We litterally had to put him to bed. Not pleasant. Then, the following night, two drunk, extremely wierd, leather-clad Quadrophenia refugees were allowed into the room (which was just off the reception area and in plain view of the front desk), to make at least 4 different trips in and out of the room over the course of an hour. They woke up the entire room and no one could tell what the hell these guys were doing. The worst part was that this was in plain view of the front disk. There seemed to be no common sense on the part of the staff's admission policies. Beware that they seem to have a policy where they will take litterally anyone off the street without concern for the existing guests.

This hotel is located very near the Vienna West train station, less than a 5 minute walk and is one block in from the major shopping street of Vienna with lots of little cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from right out side the doorstep. Over all it is a very good location with easy subway access.

The rooms were clean and well kept. There are individual lockers (bring your own lock), and the bathrooms were modern with good water pressure. There is a common room with vending machines, internet and a TV. You will usually find people hanging out in there at night. There is also a court yard with tables and chairs.

Reception is open 24 hours and they are very helpful and friendly.

Breakfast was nothing to write home about, buns with Jam and cheese spread, coffee and tea.

Although we had first booked beds at the Wombats hostel in Vienna, when we arrived at 9:30 pm they informed us that they had given away our beds already. I called the Westend City hostel, and they told us to come right down. The staff was extremely friendly and always cheerful-- always ready and willing to help in any way. The first night, we had an 8-bedded room to ourselves, which, after a long trip, was very much appreciated. The beds and other furniture all seemed brand new, washrooms were clean and nice, and the room was always spotless. Breakfast wasn't the greatest -- just buns and jam -- but it was free, so we couldn't really complain. As mentioned by someone else, the hostel is located just off the main shopping street in Vienna, a fun and lively area. The train station and metro are also less than two blocks away, so very convenient. I would definitely recommend staying here.

I was mighty impressed with this hostel. Its right on MariaHilferStrasse which is the main shopping drag in Vienna. If you take the street all the way down, you end up on the ring road on which most of Viennas main attractions are found.

The rooms are clean, and theres one shower/bathroom per 10 people, not a bad ratio by any means. Theres a GREAT CHEAP grocery store around the corner with awesome prices on booze, so go there, buy some, and drink away the early night with your hostel mates until you're ready to head out for a night on the town.

The only downside is this place does seem to cater to families as well as backpackers, thus it's a little disconcerting to see little kids and their parents walking by you as you and your new found friends are busy getting hammered on austrian wine and beer. But so goes life I suppose.

The hostel was good, as others have said its quite new so all the facilities were pretty good. The reception staff were in general very friendly and helpful, transport links are good and the hostel is right next to the main shopping street in Vienna. Drawbacks were the fact there were quite a lot of school groups, and that when we arrived back one night a few mattresses had been thrown on the floor to accommodate more people - fine, but shouldn't we get a discount?!:)
