Last year I visited Croatia for the very first time and especially enjoyed my days in Split. At that time I stayed at Al’s place and I really appreciated the athmosphere at this hostel. This year I visited Split again and stayed there for the second time. Between now and then he has installed an additional shower and has set up access to the WorldWideWeb - so now you can use the internet for a small fee. The hostel itself is located very nicely in the Diocletian Palace (make sure to download the map on Al’s website since Split is full of little confusing alleys and no-one ever uses street names!) within reach of restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, the fish and farmer’s market as well as to a laundromat. In addition, Al’s is the perfect basis for daytrips to explore Split and its surroundings (Krka waterfalls, Island Brac, etc) or simply invites you relax. The guidebook Let’s Go describes Al as an expert on Croatia. So take a chance and ask him if you need further information on Croatia. I had a great laugh and some interesting chats with him.

Make sure to book in advance since it is a cosy and small place. If the hostel is full Al will help you to find another place to stay.

I've spent amazing time at Al's Place!!!!! It is great, because it has only 12 beds, so you just can't survive meeting new people everyday!!!! As well as going out !!!!! I really recommend everyone to go there, because it has also a great location - in the Old town, just near the palace, that was built by Romans and the sea is just 1 min walk!!!!!

The location is excellent. It is about five minutes from most of the major tourist attractions, as well as good restaurants & cafes. To find it, ask the tourist office inside the archaeological zone. Surprisingly few of the neighbors even know about it. It is a small hostel with a limited number of beds. Reservations are recommended especially in the busy season. The kitchen is poor, but the bathrooms are clean & there is plenty of hot water. The common room is uninvting; many guests prefered to use the dorm as a common room. The greatest strength & the greatest weakness is Al himself. If you can get him to sit still for ten minutes, he is a very interesting fellow. Unfortunately, everything rests squarely on his shoulders. He hopes to get some help in the near future, so things should improve. The hostel is non-smoking.

Showed up before the season was officially open and got a bed anyway. Don't believe Split has nothing going for it -- it's like a village in a city with actual people in it (unlike Dubrov.). Al's is a perfect place (smack in mid of old town)to chill after hectic travelling etc --go to the market, get yourself some sheep's cheese (Al will tell you which stall) and a bottle of red. Al wasn't around too much so we had the place to ourselves quite often, but was always good for a drink and a laugh at some (very) locals only pub -- not bad for an old bastard!
