I've been to Matt's twice, and both times I have had an amazing time - I feel like other people expect far too much when they go to a surf hostel, but Matt's was what I wanted and more.

The staff are so chilled out and friendly and don't bother you at all - the one thing that we found a bit annoying is that they have changed their rules on bringing in alcohol.

Breakfast is exactly what you need before a morning of surfing - not a lot of choice, but who's complaining for the price!!

Although communal areas are small, its enough to chill out in - has a pool table and loads of board games.

Kitchen is well equipped and everyone respects the space.

Dry room is a bit small but its enough to dry your wetsuit in

Downstairs room (8 beds) is next to the dry room so it experiences some damp times - my one bit of advice would be to steer clear from this room in the winter - it can tend to get cold.

There are a few en-suite showers, but if you're not lucky enough to grab these rooms, prepare to queue.

Houses loads of people... I think we took about 35 of our Uni Surf Team down and there was still room to spare!!

I love Matt's surf lodge - I've had some amazing times here and the staff are great! I will always go back if I'm looking for a surf holiday.

I think that if you are looking for cheap accommodation in the Newquay area you can't go far wrong with this hostel because for the price you get somewhere to put your head down and also get breakfast in the morning. The atmosphere is great and the staff are very friendly and always have time to make you feel welcome, the hostel is clean and tidy and well maintained. you will meet a lot of new friends here if you want to as everyone gets along. I would recommend this hostel to anyone that I knew coming to Cornwall.

I turned up at this place to be very let down their is no pictures on their website of the place so you cannot get an insight into what it is like. The place smelt of damp and their was little natural light in the place, the place had a dull atmosphere. When we got into the room we where horrified by how small it was and the state of the room. There was a double bed in an en-suit and about half of a single bed. The sheets where extremely worn and dirty, the windows you could hardly see out of because of how dirty they where. There was mould all around the window frame inside and even worse around the window its self. The room had hardly been cleaned. The wardrobe had black mould in it and i was so horrified at the conditions of the wardrobe that i refused to put my clothes in it. The shower was very poor it would go from being boiling hot to freezing cold you could never get it at a warm temperature. There was a window in the roof of the bathroom which was covered in black mould and the window was not even sealed. Seagulls would sit on this window and stamp on it and peck at the glass as well as squawking. This would go on though out the night so sleeping was very difficult and i was woken many times at the sound of the seagulls squawking. I believe this place made me ill and i had a 7 day stay booked at the place and left to go home 3 days after arriving therefore i believe this room could promote illness and should surly be checked out by the health inspector. So in conclusion i would not recommend this place one bit it is terrible.

awesome time here all the staff are great doesn't matter if you're here months or a few days aslong as you rock up and aren't a douche bag everyone is sound.

it's also multi lingual, theres irish, scottish AND english people working there!

it's 5 minute walk from fistral and town beaches and there's usually someone around to go for a surf!

for 8-20 quid a night you can't expect the ritz but its clean and plus it's cheap like the budgie!

Matts Surf Lodge is the best backpackers to stay in Newquay. I have met many great friends and cool people in the Lodge. As to the reviews here I think all would eat their words if they revisted now. All the windows are double glazed, sparkling stanless steel kitchen which is amply big enough meaning you can cook when you want to and dont have to wait. Sure the breakfast is not a fried cooked breaky but who wants that before you go for a surf. Remember this place is a surf lodge not a 5 star hotel. Go there for great memories, great parties and great atmosphere not for a great breakfast!!

All people who want reasonable priced backpackers in the heart of Newquay near to both beaches and the Town centres night life give Matts Lodge a call. Wicked Place....

this place is the sh*t, not for townies who dont know how to live without their mummy's, if you know your sh*t then you'll notice other reviews come from characters not acquainted with the coast...The bar is only a fridge with a padlock but you get what you pay for and at least the place has a bit of depth and character you wont find anywhere else! Go there with no expectations and you'll have a f*£ing wkd time. Place is legendry. end of.

basically it was shabby, definatly dont get an ensuite. the bar was shite the host was a bitch who acted like our mum sometimes but saying that for a bunch of people wanting a cheap place just to stay it was fine. if you actually are going to spend time there then dont go but for a place to sleep - its worth the money

It was a pile of crap it was dirty and the people running it were unfriendly treehuggers. Breakfast was cereal with milk that had been left out for a few hours. The windows were thin and it was next to a busy road so u got no sleep in the morning. Having said all this it is in a good place and we didnt really spend much time there. I wouldnt bother paying extra for an ensuite because our hot water didnt work for 3 days and we didnt get an apology.
