BUG review
St Ives Backpackers is a centrally located hostel in an old stone building. It is freshly painted and features the usual kitchen, TV lounge and Internet access plus a bar and a courtyard with a barbecue.

Stayed in double bedroom..Because the room had no windows and was really tiny we felt it best to keep the door ajar so to get some air in there. The room is on a mezzaine floor, above the common hall area, and so basically the common area is outside the room. Things were OK until 1.30amish when the nice staff member went to bed and then the TV volume went so high it was impossible to sleep. Then this really selfish staff member decides that at 3am he should put on the stereo sound system, really LOUD. the speakers go around the whole huge hall common room which our room opens out onto and so are really blaring into our room. door shut or not. So I had to run around trying to find this so called staff member in order to ask him to turn the sound system off (its now like 3.30am).After asking someone I saw he was in a room near us with some girl, he turned the stereo down but then we had to listen to them doing their thing and then chatting away outside our door.So got no bloody sleep thanks to this selfish prat. I would not recommend the place. Also the loos are miles away from the double rooms which is a pain, when you are being waken up all early morning hours..The good things were, a very nice female staff member who was apparently new, this woman was really nice and even put some flowers in our room, she was way helpful and really nice. But still I would never go back.We got like literally 2 hours sleep because of the selfish annoying noisey staff member...

The staff was unhelpful and bordered on rude. The kitchen and the bathrooms were messy, and there was no social atmosphere. The showers had very little water pressure as well, and my mate said that he could hear sounds from the street in his room as loudly as if there was no wall.

St. Ives backpackers is a huge, rambling maze of a place with very little going for it apart from that it is reasonably clean. The staff, while friendly in a stand-offish, very distant way seem to view their guests as inconveniances to be given the minimum possible attention and the common room is about as impersonal and sterile a place as you're likely to find outside of a high school or hospital. This is a hostel very much run for money, remember your change for the showers and guard you toilet rolls with your life as they are provided only in theory. On the up side they have a nice little discount card for various businesses in the town, but on the downside the front door lock breaks about once a week. Don't leave your cash around. There is often a very young crowd in high summer, lots of rich little english surfers, so if you enjoy meat markets this may be the place for you. Personally I ended up opting to sleep in a tent on the beach after a week at this place, cheaper, quieter, and there are showers in the municipal car park that have better water pressure. Also the hostel which could sleep a small army only had one washing machine and no tumble dryer last time I was there. In misty Cornwall this is definately a bad thing.

The hostel is quite good and not very busy (I was there in June and only had to share my 6 bed room with one other person). I found the place quite clean and the staff to be very friendly. There is a large common room where you can play pool, use the internet or watch TV (a good place to meet other hostellers), and there is a decent kitchen for cooking. Overall it is very laid back (just like the town) and good for a couple days of relaxing.

Atmosphere was bit dull. I liked it, except that they put up the price to 15 a night (normally 10) on bank holiday's when the place was pretty much empty.
