BUG Review
Kendal's YHA hostel is a Georgian town house in the town centre that has facilities that include the usual kitchen and TV lounge plus a games room with pool tables and table football.
Price Dorm bed £19.50 (£17.50 HI/YHA) Prices are in local currency and are inclusive of all taxes.
I paid for an ensuite room and the shower had bacterias on the wall... there was other people´s hair on the floor and the worst of it is that it never worked!!!!! When I asked to change to another room, the manager turned to me with 4 pounds back and very nasty attitude.
I wouldn´t recommend it to anyone. Is expensive and the service is poor. Also the hostel is fifthy!

Clean rooms, clean baths and other common rooms. The kitchen was fine to cook in. The building is unique with "fun house" floors that had character! The staff was great and helpful. It was nice to order breakfast.

We stayed in Kendal in the fall sort of on a whim--we wanted to visit the Lake District and it happend that the train went there fairly easily. We took the bus from the train station (a scary experience cause the roads are extremley narrow) and the driver asked where we were going. We told him the hostel and he dropped us right at the door! Very nice. The hostel itself is on the dingy side--our room had 3 sets of bunks but it was a pretty big room with some shelves to put your things on, as well as a sink and mirror right in the room. There were no lockers for bags, but you did have a key to the room. The room matches the town though--old and rickety and run down. The mattress on the bunk was covered in this weird upholstery fabric, but the sheets they gave us were clean. The bunkbed was a little shifty and I was slightly worried being on the bottom bunk but I survived. There is a lock out during the day but when we got there a guy was at the desk--when you sign in you're asked to choose your breakfast for the next morning so they have an idea of what food to buy. There's a small dining room (comfy but cramped) and our breakfast was cooked by the same guy who runs the front desk--the front office and the "kitchen" are linked so that was a little weird. The bathroom/shower situation is interesting. The toilet is in a little room on it's own, along with the shower in another room. I can't say for sure how many showers there are--maybe 2? It's a funny little hostel--nothing matches and some rooms are nicer than others but like I said--it really matches the feeling and mood of the sleepy little town.However, the town of Kendal is really quiet and cute--definitley felt like real "England" compared to London. There are many little shops along Main Street but we chose to explore Kendal Castle--ruins of this old castle up on the hill that can be seen from pretty much anywhere in town. It's a bit of a hike (and a challenge to find out exactly how to access it) but totally worth it--there's a huge field around the circular ruins of the castle (no admission--totally free!) where you can sit and relax and see the classic rolling hills of England with sheep grazing in plots of field seperated by stone fences--classic! If you're looking for a change of pace from London, then a lazy day in Kendal would be recommended, but you couldn't spend much more than a day in that sleepy town. Plus you probably wouldn't want to stay more than a night or two in the hostel.
