The hostel is located on the hillside high above Windermere and has a superb view of the lake and the mountains beyond. The common room is comfortable and, in winter, has an open fire. Meals are excellent, with a good choice of menu, including vegetarian. Members' kitchen is roomy and scrupulously clean. Hostel Manager and staff are all most helpful and hospitable. During the main season, the hostel is served by a shuttle-bus which meets trains and inter-city buses at Windermere village and transports hostelers to any of the five hostels in the Windermere area.

I spent a period working in this hostel and I'm not surprised to read the previous review. The working atmosphere was terrible and they had trouble keeping staff. I wonder if they still use animal fat spread to make their vegetarian sandwiches...

On this anniversary of Sept 11th, I'm reminded of Human Nature at its worst. Windermere Youth Hostel was the only Hostel in the U.K. to debit our credit card when we were trapped in Canada and gave them a week's notice that we had to cancel our reservation due to the terrorist attack. Every other YHA understood given the circumstances. When we contacted the other YHAs to make our cancellation, we were touched by nice comments suchs as: "Of course Deary, its no problem, we are accomodating the Canadians and Americans that are trapped on this side!". The Windermere YHA management was callous in their response, they basically stated that it was our tough luck. Its clear they only think of one thing: the almighty dollar (or pound).Do not give these people your money. When this horrible event happened, it highlighted the worst and best of people. Windermere YHA took this opportunity to show its most ugly side. By the way, I never did make it to the U.K. I plan on going in the next year or two. I'll be sure to go to Windermere - I'll be the one protesting in front of this hostel, making sure all the other tourists know what kind of people run that hostel. And by the way, if the management of the Windermere YHA read this - I've kept your nasty email from last year! I'll bring a copy to show all your customers.
