BUG review
Globe Backpackers is a nice hostel with a friendly atmosphere, bright airy rooms and good solid bunk beds. There's a small TV lounge and a fully equipped kitchen. It is the closest hostel to the city centre, which makes it a good choice if you're travelling by public transport.

very busy international backpackers venue - great fun!
8 July 2007

Pros: A freindly place with at least a dozen different nationalities under one roof when I visited
Cons: some people may find the road outside noisy if they are new to City living

Did not recognize this as the same hostel reviewed by another in February. There were no homeless people, just backpackers and a couple of British people visting Exeter. The hostel was very clean and just needs new carpets really.

Everyone was very friendly, and there was a great atmosphere. I stayed a week, and on the Friday night it was a little noisy downstairs in the social areas until 1am, but I couldn't hear this in my room upstairs.

All-in-all I would recommend this hostel to anyone who enjoys good company and a great atmosphere - I will return next time I'm in the UK!

Experience of second weekend in February 2007. Welcome: live in warden at desk for most of the day; money taken upfront; dirty hall carpet. Put linen provided on beds yourself. Cleanliness: grimy duvets on beds need washing or replacing. Otherwise kitchen and toilets were clean. General repair: slightly seedy air, poor decoration, we found one bed in dormitory splintered and damaged. Noise: intolerable at night. The stairs are generally noisy. A semi-permanent group of occupants who were causal workers rather than backpackers, partied all night keeping other visitors awake. When asked to be quiet they became agressive and asserted a right to make as much noise as they liked because it was their "home". The warden told us we would "have to put up with the noise" and played off the visitors against the casual workers. Up to six people wrestling with each other on the common room floor at one time. The Police were called at about 03:00 hrs which quietened things down a little.

We had planned to spend two nights at this hostel but abondoned it after the first night.

My advice: Avoid this hostel unless you are homeless or a casual worker.

i visited the globe in august 2 years ago,

so maybe it has changed, but:

staff was helpful and polite, i had not the feeling of being overcharged in any way (paid cash),

room and linen were VERY clean. the shower was not absolutely perfect (but then it IS a youth hostel).

Common area and kitchen were fine too. (enough space)

All in all it confirmed my to decision to stay in "Backpackers" instead of the "international youth hostels". I was not proven wrong yet.

lots of extra charges, eg. leave the bag there for £1; service charges for using credit card but did not inform you before.

the common room is very smoky and dirty.

kitchen is dirty and crowdy but well equipped.

the bosses seem to be quite friendly.
