In 15 years of travelling the world I've stayed in some real hellholes, but nothing compares to the Plume & Feathers. Let's start at the beginning. Four of us booked a 4 bed bunkhouse for 3 nights. When we booked the landlord asked us to give him a deposit of 2 nights accommodation. We told him that as we had a long journey we would probably be arriving after 11pm. He seemed fine with this, but in retrospect maybe this was because he already had 2 night's worth of money from us. This was the last time we had anything resembling hospitable service from him. On the night we arrived we were running a little late, so at 11.22pm we phoned to tell him we'd be arriving in another 20 min. I was shocked by his response. He told me that if we didn't arrive in the next 7 minutes, then we weren't getting in. It was unbelievable, the pub didn't close until 11.30 and after he'd spent 10-15 minutes clearing up, the most we would have delayed his bed time was by 5 or 10 minutes. But presumably he was happy to go to sleep in the knowledge that he already had our money for 2 nights accommodation. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) for us, we were travelling in 2 separate cars and the other car arrived with 2 minutes to spare. When they arrived he said that he didn't even know we were coming, but after searching his records he finally found our booking. Up to this point I was imagining spending a night sleeping in the car on Dartmoor and on reflection, this might have been better than the bunkhouse at the Plume Of Feathers. The room was tiny with hardly enough space to move. The beds were too small for all of us. Worse still, the beds come without any bedding, they all simply have a plastic coated matress presumably so that the landlord doesn't ever have to bother to clean the room. It was extremely uncomfortable and none of us got much sleep that night. The following day after a long day walking in the rain, we would have loved to have come back to a warm place where we could shower and dry our clothes. Unfortunately we were staying in the Plume Of Feathers. The heating was turned off and although we hung our clothes out to dry, 18 hours later they were still almost as wet. The showers didn't offer much comfort either. The place appeared to be set up in such a way as to force you to seek sanctuary in the pub downstairs where in desperation we would hand over more of our hard earned cash to our unfriendly host. Fortunately for us, we discovered that down the road was a lovely pub called the Prince Of Wales. Nicely heated, nice food and drink and friendly staff. I hope that it's still there this time next year, though I'm not hopeful as the landlord of the Plume Of Feathers has already bought Princetown's other pub The Railway and closed it down. All in all a horrible experience. DO NOT STAY THERE, DO NOT DRINK THERE AND DO NOT GIVE THIS AWFUL PERSON A PENNY OF YOUR MONEY.
