There aren't many budget options in Leicester. The choice for me was between the YMCA and Dick's, but I had to go with Dicks because I have a car, and at the YMCA the parking option was complicated. So I stayed at Dick's.

After staying for one night I had had enough of the filth and Dick's pettiness and invasiness. I tried to relocate to the YMCA but was unable to. So I spent the rest of my week at Dicks.

These are my thoughts:

1. The place is very dirty. Old food was stuck to plates, surfaces and the floor. The kitchen was always a mess, even though he said he cleaned in daily. The floors throughout the house had bits all over them, suggesting that the place hadn't been swept or vacuumed in a while. I always re-washed everything before I used it. And I don't consider myself to be a clean-freak. The place is just that grotty.

2. If you value your privacy you are going to struggle. This is not a standard backpacker place, but a small house (home) that you will be sharing with Dick himself. Apart from the bedrooms there is only 1 living area, and Dick is generally always in this living area. If he wasn't in the living area and I went into the living area, he would immediately join me, which made me feel like I was being followed.

3. Dick is pretty bossy about some silly things, for example, I was forbidden from scrolling through the SKY menu because he said it would ruin his TV. And other things that were equally daft.

4. Positively, Dick is very forthcoming with touristy things to do, travel tips and the like. Is you do need any information Dick generally has a friendly answer.

5. There is hot water, central heating, SKY TV, street parking, cooking facilities, and most of the things that you will need to survive. The wrist cuffs are still on the wall, which is a bit worrying. At night I bolted myself into my room.

I have travelled about quite a bit, have a life YHA membership, and seen some grotty places. This was one of the worst. Good luck!

Richard lived up to his name- very dodgy. There was no privacy, the bedroom was tiny(bunkbeds) and had the last peoples rubbish in there. The house itself hasn't been cleaned in what I would estimate as years. The kitchen was disgusting and I couldn't have gone in the bathroom without wearing shoes. Richards conversation was very odd- young people who'd stayed there before and their penchant for only wearing their underwear and suicide amongst the army. We were there for no more than 20 minutes before we made our escape. I would thoroughly recommend not going there alone if you must at all. At £10 per person per night, I cannot believe that he is still being allowed to have this business. I'm not making sweeping remarks- we both felt very uneasy there- especially with a pair of proper handcuffs hanging up in the living room.
