The beaten path is just a stone's throw away so if you shudder at the idea of anything beyond the most basic public transit, this is the hostel for you. Its location - literally across the street from St. Paul's - means you can beat the crowds to the Whispering Gallery in the morning and then catch the bus straight down to the Tower, Trafalgar Square, Westminster, etc with ease! The common room is cosy and the breakfast both comprehensive (meaning that meat, eggs and yogurt made an appearance as opposed to your traditional "full hostel breakfast" of stale bread) and unlimited. Obese hostellers, rejoice! Sadly, the bunks were beyond cosy. The way they stacked ontop of one another meant that if you got the bottom you might feel like you need a tag on your toe and identification by the next of kin. Also, it's well pricey. Eat at the nearby Marks & Sparks "Simply Food" instead of a restaurant and you might be able to justify the expense.

Stayed there yesterday in a single room on the top floor (GBP 37,50). The equipment was quite spartan: Bed, desk, wash basin, TV (which I didn´t try out). Functional, but workable. Unfortunately, the heating in my room did not work, with night temperatures of less than 4 degrees Celsius, it was a frosty experience.

Showers were warm and with proper water pressure but nowhere to put your shampoo/shower stuff, no shower curtains but the door was far enough from teh water so you did not soak yout clothing if you were careful.

Breakfast was included in the price, however this must have been the worst scrambled egg I ever had for English Breakfast and the staff was very stingy when it came to the size of the helpings. One spoonfull of scrambled egg, one sausage and two slices of bacon don´t exactly set you up for the day, so be sure to stock up on musli, toast, joghurt and jam at the buffet :-(

The hostel was very quiet (suited me fine as I had an interview the next day), easy to reach (just opposite the St Pauls Chuchyard), staff was friendly and efficient.

Luggage storage in the Luggage Room is 2-3 GBP in coin-operated lockers if you do not want to leave it standing unattended (the room must be buzzed open by reception so it´s not like it was standing in the open).

There is one common room/TV room with sofas, the lobby at reception with a few seats and two coin-operated Internet PCs and the restaurant plus a pool table in the basement.

YHA City of London was a really nice hostel. By nice I mean clean, quiet, safe, and secure. I enjoyed the security at the front, where you have to buzz in every time you have to come in although there's no ID check after that. Could have wanted more 'warm' water during the day, but hey, it's a hostel. The area, as most other reviewers wrote, was very convenient - close to two tube lines, express food shops, and restaurants. What is up with everything being closed at 6pm? I guess it's because in the City (a business district) everything is closed at 6pm. Could have really done without the church bells. On the hour, every hour. And every half hour too. It is very quiet, I was the only one in my room (5 women) to come back during the day. But other than that, I really enjoyed, as a lone traveller, the experience there. If you're planning a low-key kind of trip, this hostel is perfect. Breakfast is good too.

all the reviews here pretty much sum up the hostel perfectly. the only reason i wouldn't stay here is if i specifically wanted to go out and have big crazy nights and meet loads of people and stumble home at 5am (not that theres anything wrong with that plan). for anyone else who is a bit more relaxed about their time in london i think it's great, really good tube access, quiet area, central to most big attractions, good rooms and the people in my dorm at least were all quite friendly. felt very safe as single female in the area it was in and the local pubs look small but friendly. I would definitely recommend this hostel, the only real problem is a lack of a kitchen if you are planning a longer stay.

Very organized and quiet. Not a "teen" backpacking hostel but that's what appealed to me. This place is excellent if you are with a friend or two and looking for a good "home base". If you are looking to meet lots of other people to party with, I'd look elsewhere.

Very close to the tube line (St. Pauls), a grocery 1 minute away, and minutes walk from some major sites.

Staff were friendly (minus some kitchen staff who could be nicer).

Breakfast was quite good and a nice bonus. Rooms were clean and sheet were good. Bathrooms were quite clean (usually) and water pressure in showers excellent. Could use a hook or shelf to hang stuff on.

Locker room was safe without having to use lockers. The 3 pound charge per locker was a tad high, as was internet but not obscene.

As others mentioned, it's on the expensive side, but I feel you get what you pay for.

Overall, I quite enjoyed my stay.

Super clean, great breakfast, great location only detraction is that it is a bit expensive compared to some other London hostels and isn't really a party place which is either good or bad depending on what you are after.

this hostel is pretty pricey, but it seems like everything in london is. anyway, it was definitely worth the money. the sheets were spotlessly clean, the rooms are pretty big, the staff is friendly and helpful, no curfew, close to the tube.

it's in a pretty quiet neighborhood, right next to st. paul's. the location is excellent, close to everything by tube. you can just walk across the bridge to get to tate modern and shakespeare's globe. plenty of heat in the winter, which was great. the showers were amazing...high pressure, hot water, very clean...best i've been in since home.

they also have a wonderful breakfast from 7:30-9:30 that is included in the price: eggs, ham, sausage, toast, croissants, cereal, porridge, orange juice and coffee...just what you need for a long day of sightseeing. there's also dinner availabe, which is much more convenient than searching for a place if you have a lot of things to see and little time.

the only warning is that it can be difficult to find even though it's close. the sign was pointing in the wrong direction, so i followed the wrong street and was lost for half an hour. just be sure of the directions.

i will definitely be coming back!! all the reviews of hostels in london seemed to be horrible, so this was definitely worth the extra money. it's not a party hostel or anything, but if you've come to see the sights and experience london and you want a good night of sleep, this hostel is wonderful.

The location is fantastic. The breakfast is great. The place is clean.

When I stayed there last month only 2 toilets worked on our floor (it appeared about 5 were out of order) the same happened with the showers. It would be helpful to have more than one hook or a chair in the shower room.

The stairs up to the dorm rooms aren't great if you have a case. You also need to be rather flexible (physically) to get into the dorm beds/bunks.

Big lockers - but bring your own lock.

The check in was pretty slow and painful. There is also very little open nearby on the weekends. There are no cooking facilities.

Just follow the brown signs (look up!) from St Pauls.

Despite the criticisms, I would definitely stay there again.

This conveniently located hostel is just a 5 minute walk from Blackfriars tube station and only 3 stops away from Charing Cross, from where you can easily walk to the Thames (London Eye, Big Ben, Westminister Abbey, etc), or to Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, Soho, etc.

I stayed 5 nights in a 6 bed dorm. The room was large and there was a hand basin in the corner. The bed was very comfortable, and on the edge of each bed is a small storage compartment with a sliding lid where you can put your keys, glasses, etc. There are lockers right next door to the beds.

There is internet access in the foyer (50 pence for 7 minutes) and next door to the foyer is a large T.V./reading room. Downstairs you'll find a laundry as well as a smokers' room with a T.V. so there are plently of places to meet people.

Breakfast is your typical English greasy spoon fry-up, but they also have fruit and various cereals. There are no self-catering facilities.

There are toilets and showers everywhere. The showers are 'real'; i.e. there is plenty of high pressure hot water, no timers and lots of room to hang your towel and clothes where they don't get wet while you are having your shower.

Security is tight - you have to push a button to get in - and there is a security guard at night for 24 hour access.

There are a number of pubs nearby, but noise isn't a problem as they tend to close fairly early.

There is a large Tourist Information Centre just a minute's walk away, in front of St Paul's Cathedral but I found the staff friendly were very helpful when it came to asking for tourist advice. You can also buy discount tickets for some attractions (e.g. London Eye).

All in all, this hostel has just about everything the budget tourist could ask for. It is THE place to stay in London!

I have stayed in this hostel several times and will continue to do so. The location is great and the staff helpful. I also find that the other visitors are fine. So far, in the women's rooms, there have been no problems with theft or excessive noise, and the other people are usually happy to exchange trip details and tips. Now I am working in northern England I like to come here for a weekend and catch a show and/or do shopping. Tip : bring your own padlock for the large individual lockers located next to each bed.
