ok people, u will not find king size beds , egiptian linens, gourmet meals or room service but come on!! it's a hostel for peeps travelling on a budget looking for adventure. oh, and u'll find it here. the people i met here were unforgettable . if u let it happen u will have the best time in london. richmond is just around the corner but if u want u r more than welcome to venture out of the area to find the most exciting night life on the face of this planet. but remember, u might be going to bed but the party's still going on in the lounge (this is not a place for whimps!) actually some of the funnest nights i spent in the lounge partying to the mtv on the telly dancing around the coffee table with a bunch of fantastic aussie blokes (even the one whose name starts with a P!!) club fern we called it. overcrowded? not when i stayed there, and i did twice. cleanliness? well let me just put it this way, that little tiny space in the corner between your bed and the empty wardrobe consider that your room and if u want to keep it clean u will but knowing the fact that u'r on holidays, u probably wont. so the "cleaning crew" will do everything they can to keep the rooms tidy but really it's up to you. the toilets and the showers were working just fine when i was there, so can not complain. sorry guys don't have much to say about the breakfast that apparently was included 'coz i was on my holiday time and that did not engage getting up any time b4 noon. but the kitchen was fun. met a lot of cool people, shared food and made friends. the same people u were running with to the "pakistani shop" for some "rice and curry" late at night, if u know what i mean! the area rocks! it's earls court after all. LONDON!! god i love that city!if u'r an easy going, openminded, fun person looking to make friends, trying to spend as little as u can this is the place to stay. it's been a while, but i'm definitely going back soon!!

Hey!!

Okay, I'll start with the only bad point...It's not a luxuary place! Well, that's okay if you can deal with that!!

I've met the best people I've ever met during all my life! We had much more fun partying in the TV room than anywhere else (okay...maybe except the Richmond on Thursdays!)! Whenever you walked in the Silver Fern, you find people willing to be friend with you!

I miss you Silver Fern!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Become an hostel again!!!!!!

The people- they make your stay at Silver Fern unforgettable. The atmosphere, night sitting on the stairs and chatting with folks from around the world is what I remember most. Breakfast with your new friends that you met last night, going out to The Richmond (the closest night club) with them and having a great time !!! strongly recommended !!

The stay at Silver Fern is probably one of the most enjoyable times I had in Europe. If you are looking for a good toast and orange juice breakfast complete with cafeteria trays and vitamin C vitamins, this is not the place for you. This place is real. And this place is filled with real people. Some are sociable, some are idiots, some are shy, and some are the coolest kids you'll ever meet. It's the real deal. All types of people from all different cultures and backgrounds.

Hangin' out on the stairs all nite having a smoke and drink is where you find yourself connecting with people. Good simple and common conversations of 'Where are you from?', 'How's life where you live?' Yeah, I admit, it may not be a four star palace, but if you're backpacking through Europe, why the hell would you want that anyways?!? Save the breakfast in bed for your honeymoon kid. This is as real as it gets. I met some great Italian girls that I shared a room with and met some great people that work in the staff. If you leave hating the hostel and everyone there, you were probably not going there with an open mind anyways. If you want to see and experience different groups of people in their rawest form, this is the place for you. If you have been sheltered by your mom your whole life and are afraid of staying in places that don't meet your cleanliness standards, or afraid of someone possibly being rude to you, then stay away. Live it and love it and find what people are all about.......including yourself......

Overcrowded as can be. They actually take out 60% of their beds and put them in a truck whenever the local council inspects. Imagine 8 to a room where there is supposed to be 3. I can understand barebones but please the owner repeatedly pays people to boost his reviews. I wouldnt be surprised if the previous review was by him or one of his people. Really avoid people. At least you get a breakfast at the YHA. All you get here is cornflakes. I was so tempted to fill the owner's BMW with cornflakes when he used to come by to collect his blood money. Avoid avoid avoid. The Kingsway is a much better building

Initially the Fern was a wonderful place and although I haven't stayed there for a while it probably still has some good attributes, notably in its atmosphere. However, the people on the stairs can try the patience if you've come in from work and the staff can on occassion invent their own rules. For one I was nearly ripped off by someone behind the counter but was tipped off, secondly, I was asked to leave a room having been fed 'it's going to be a staff quarter.' It was not! The rooms are also cramped beyond there intended architectural merits ie. there are 8 beds in a room not made for one. Showers vary, some good, others abysmal, but for the price and with the obligitory free cornflakes and tea/coffee it fits the budget genre well, if not to a five star capacity, three is ok.

If you want good people and a great time on your adventure away from home come down to the Silver fern. It may not be posh but all you need is a pair of flip-flops.

My friend and I were sent here after another hostel failed to keep our reservation.

The rooms were cramped and dirty. The beds were so ramshackle that I worried they would collapse on me during the night. Furthermore, my bed was wet. Many of the rooms were shut up, therefore leaving a thick fog and a reeking stench of smoke and whatever had been done in the bathroom. The smoke from the cigarettes (and the drugs being sold there) burned my eyes as soon as I walked in the door.

Bathrooms were dirty and broken down. They were moldy and sometimes nonfunctional.

We were told that when we returned at the end of the week, we could have a double room to ourselves. When we returned at the end of the week, at the time they had told us to return, we found our room had been given away.

The guy behind the counter was helpful, for he helpfully told us that even though they had given our room away, there would be no refunds.

We stayed elsewhere and were glad for it.
