We were a group of 5 people who stayed at Millennium Lodge one week in May. It was a fantastic place to stay for that little money. The staff wore friendly, kind and very helpsome.

Many of the staff members lived at the hostel and that created a familiar and cosy atmosphere. We had three teenagers with us, and there wore good space for them.

We had read, on this site about different people, complained about no toilet paper in the bathrooms. When we were at the hostel, there were between 2 and 5 rolls on each toilet in different colours! Also someone said the showers were cold. I had the first morning a very cold shower until I found out the tap are opposite in England I had only opened for the cold water!

The breakfast was good, with toasted bread, jam, butter, cornflakes, milk and tea or coffee.

There are no plates, knives or cops or pots and pans in the kitchen. Only a sink and a fridge, which will work fine if you bring your own cooking stuff!

The pool table is awesome!

Well defiantly come back and use the hostel another time were in London!

I'm quite surprised to read some scathing reviews of the Millennium Lodge.

Granted, the rooms are quite run-down, but what do you expect for £10 a night? Yes, there is some noise and people get up at different times - this is what it's like in a hostel, I should think. (In fact, the Millennium Lodge also offers singles for £25 a night, which is well below the B&B rate in many a British holiday destination. As I'm planning to relax, relax, relax this summer, I'll actually stay in in a single room. It's got to do with getting older, too, I suppose...)

I found the toilets reasonably clean, they were evidently being cleaned on a daily basis. (And while I am quite tolerant about creative chaos, I'm paranoid about toilets.) As for the showers in the rooms, their degree of cleanliness varied.

The restaurant was really cheap (I remember they had raised the prices when I last visited though) and good quality, and there are plenty of cheap sandwich places and cafés in the area. The breakfast consisted of toast and jam as well as tea - not too bad if you consider how much you'd pay for just that in some hostels.

It's not, as has been remarked by other reviewers, out of the way: Kensal Green tube station, which is also served by Silverlink trains to Euston, is directly opposite (zone 2). It's about an hour to Oxford Circus - well, so what? London is a big place, innit? Also, busses go to the city centre - also at night, no need to get a taxi.

It's situated in a nice residential area, and you'll learn much more about London and see more of the real thing than around Victoria. Queen's Park is just round the corner, the cemetary is amazing (Thackeray, and W. H. Smith, among others, are buried there! If you're lucky, there's an open day on the cemetary while you're there - don't miss the catacombs!), and Wembley's just a few minutes on the bus, too.

(I'm a bit puzzled about how you could have had noise from the street AND views of the Crematorium at the same time. Because of the noise though, it is advisable to ask for a room on the Crematorium side.)

Socially, I found the Millennium Lodge more interesting and enlightening than any other place I've ever stayed in. Apparently some backpackers are badly in need of realising that there's people other than themselves - the Millennium Lodge is the place to find out.

I will owe that this hostel is not the ideal place for ticking off sights from your list. For getting a taste of London other than the Tower and Pall Mall, it's the best place you can go to (you'll do the sights anyway, won't you?).

I was prepared for this place by the reviews on the BUG site! Very cheap, cleanliness OK for price, did appreciate free lift from Victoria Coach Station. Got the idea I should be particularly streetwise when the security fellas checked toilets every hour & escorted a previous guest (spoke of as the crazy lady) to my room to remove bags and go! Tried to heat food in kitchen located on my level, no pots, plates etc, was told could borrow from the restaurant downstairs but deposit required! Got them to heat my food in their microwave for free. Light on/people crashing round in room til 1:30am, others up at 6:30am. Breakfast, couldnt find, was tired, so got my bag and checked out! Whole experience was surreal, sorta reminded me of the appartment buildings in The Matrx movie, completed by a blonde dread locked security guard or two! Wouldnt return unless I was hard up for money, a basic bed for a basic price! and if you want a bit of partying, young, funky in a grimy way. Seemed like they were trying to please the regular crowd there.

The one good point of this hostel is that it is cheap and has free breakfast. Other than that, the location is horrible. It is very far from all of the sights. It is also located in front of a cemetary and near a cremetorium. The smell was horrible, the rooms were not clean, our view of the cemetary was disturbing, and the noise from the streets at night was annoying. I honestly did not get a good nights sleep while here. My friends and I were in a room for 4 people and since there were 3 of us in the middle of our first night a weird lady joined our room. That was a horrible experience as well. We had a shower in our room, but the water was either too cold or burning. As for the free shuttle to Victoria, it did get us to Victoria, but we feared for our lives the whole time as the man sped through the streets almost hitting several cars. As you can tell I did not enjoy my stay here and would not recommend it to anyone. There has to be better hostels than this in London.

All I can say about our stay in this hostel is thank God it was only for one night. We found it to be very dirty and out of the way. Nothing was going on in the area around the hostel and it was far away from all of London's main attractions. In our room, there were several iron burns on the carpet and our view out the window looked onto a huge cemetary...not exactly what you want to see when waking up. My bed, the top bunk, swayed from side to side very easily and seemed quite unsafe. There are plenty of hostels in London that have to be better than this. Keep looking!

I would never ever recommend this hostel. Honestly, the only reason to stay there are really cheap prices (£10 which is probably not much for London) but that's pretty much it. It's located in fucking nowhereland ages away from places where anything is happening. Apart from residential areas you can enjoy a view over a huge cemitary.

The place where you have breakfast (2 slices of toast with jam, tea and a napkin...) reminded me incredibly much of my school and the pictures were less than a half-heated attempt to make this place look funky. Apart from the huge sice and impersonal atmosphere, there's absolutely no socialising area at all. I only wonder how long-termers can stand it without getting bored and depressed.

PLUS you can't go out if you don't want to pay for a cab, as you have to be back when the last tube leaves.

The Millennium Lodge has been there for me in times of great need. What can I say? It is cheap, international, friendly and clean. As you might expect, the place has quite a young feel, but don't let that put you off if you are getting on in years, because you will always find other people of the same age to hang out with - families often stay too.

There is a large dining area where most people eat and chat - also where free breakfast is served: coffee/tea, toast and jam. There are cooking facilities on every floor. The TV room is downstairs. All rooms have a shower and a variable amount of beds, dependent upon price (around 10 quid) and are either all male, female or (occasionally) mixed. Book for a week and you'll get a discount - you will, however, need a five quid key deposit on top (but KEEP YOUR RECEIPT and you'll get it back). No curfew, no lockout. Large safe storage area (big thumbs up).

Kensal Green is situated to the west of London's West End, which makes it a good spot from which to visit attractions, and yet, as it is intercrossed by railways, primary route roads, and the Grand Union Canal, (a good place to unwind in daylight hours) it leaves the remaining 'islands' of space fairly 'low rent' but well connected (Leytonstone it is not).

Outside the lodge you can jump on a bus or catch a tube into town, similarly, aim your pushbike down the hill, or even walk, if you're not in any great hurry. You'll also find four BT phone boxes right across the road.

For a better night's sleep, try and get a dorm away from the road - the whole gaff backs on to a very ancient, and London's largest, cemetery (very gothic and currently home to many of London's dead community). Again, well worth a visit, but only in the daytime (!) Sleep sounder still knowing the burly chaps employed as the hostel's security are on the front door - nice guys, but obviously not pushovers.

Mingle, and you will meet an assortment of backpackers, students, migrant workers, people on holiday, buskers, or, perhaps, just maybe, a recently evicted squatter!
