A quiet alternative to other St. Christopher's, November 17, 2006
Reviewer: jasonfromdallas from Buffalo, NY, USA

I stayed here for 3 days last summer.

The other St. Christopher's hostels, especially those with a Belushi's, are much more like party hostels and seem to always have large groups of students around. This hostel is a bit quieter and more pleasant if you value sleep.

The location just to the South of the river would not be considered "ideal" by traditional tourist guides because this is more like a working class neighborhood. It has only a few museums within easy walking distance and is not packed with many tourist sites.

However, its location can also be seen as a plus because you have the bus at the front door that takes you straight across the river in 5 minutes to the main tourist zones; plus the local neighborhood has more local style pubs and shops. The tube is a 5 minute walk and Waterloo International train station / London Bridge are also fairly close.

The hostel is clean enough, but not sparkling; the hostel is comfortable enough, but not luxurious. The showers are ok, the toilets are decent.

I am a twenty-something American male and shared the room with 3 teen-aged Russian girls - so be prepared to get to know strangers of the opposite sex and of different ages fairly well. If you absolutely don't want anyone seeing you in your sleepwear or underwear, don't stay here, if you're ok with a little familiarity, then you'll be fine.

The staff is friendly enough, mostly young people from all over the world though who may not know more about London then you.

Overall, this hostel is reliable and a fine base for trips to London. The facilities are nothing special, but decent. The location is reasonable if not spectacular. I'd stay here again.

If you like noise this place is for you. Stayed there 2 nights, the first night there was a lot of noise from the street but it wasn't anything earplugs couldn't fix. The 2nd night the karaoke from the pub below literally rattled my bed until 4am.

Otherwise the place was decent. Checking in down the street was a bit of a pain but the staff were alright. Overall, not bad.

I'm staying here currently, and the place is very clean. The pub downstairs is good for some fun, gets a bit smokey and noisey after 9, but the rooms are upstairs from it and I can't hear the noise at all. They have a free drink from 5-7pm every night and £1 shots durring that time. They are very close to the underground and staff have been extremely helpful and friendly.

The showers are push button and only last about 30 seconds (you can push the button multiple times). I had no problems with hot water, but pressure was a bit lacking, especially once other people got into the showers as well. Take one in the early evening or late morning and you won't have a problem.

Breakfast is included and is cereal and toast and coffe/water. There is no elevator so don't bring a ton of baggage.

It is near to London Bridge, London Dungeon, Tower of London, etc. It is much closer to a lot of toursity stuff than some of the other hostels. I would definatly stay here again.

st. christopher's has good location and security. it also has a very loud pub which seems to facilitate some hard partying, if you're into that sort of thing. however, the rooms were small and the sheets hadn't been cleaned. in fact, my friend's sheets had some rather suspicious stains on them and mine had what was either dirt or dead skin cells left from the last person who stayed there. the bathroom by our room was tiny and unkempt as well, with a toilet that barely worked and no hot water. maybe the other bathrooms were nicer than this one, i couldn't say since this it is the only one i used. if these things don't really bother you, st. christopher's does some things going for it.

I need a long hot shower - they have 30 second showers. I was out of there the next day. Also the lady on reception was rude to me. The dorms had lots of room though.

My older brother stayed in this place in '97 and has not stopped talking about it since. I had to check it out myself. The building is old and full of history the staff are all backpackers and can set you on the right track.I planned to stay for three days and stayed for 3 weeks met up with some really cool kiwis who I am now travelling with. We partied hard as we could and had a great time. We also stayed at Bath and Edinburgh with St. Christophers and had the same awesomw time, my brother is comming back this summer with his family.

Great times St. Christophers-Thanks

Its an old building but its rockin' the rooms are neat, not to big and clean. There's also a Pub underneath which really gets rockin on the weekend. Awesome staff - crazy - but damn they know how to party. Ther is a sister hostel just 5 min. down the road with a sauna and a hot tub (no commends) an absolute must do if in London. cheers st.-christophers
