not too bad a hostel, February 11, 2006

stayed here for 4 nights and found this hostel to be not too bad. The staff were friendly and helpful. The place was pretty clean, including the toilets and showers and the sort of standard you'd expect in a hostel really. Chillout-area was allright. Didn't bother going in the bar though so can't comment on that. The dorm's were OK, I stayed in a 10 bed dorm and the guys and gals were friendly. Did have one complaint though, the hostel advertised that it has a hot tub and sauna - none of them were working during the 4 nights I was there! After a hard day out job hunting and flat hunting each day I was looking forward to getting back to the hostel in the evenings to relax in the sauna and hot tub for an hour or two, so this was a bit of a disappointment! There was a lot of noise at night though from the busy street down below with traffic noise and people outside chatting(or shouting rather) from the bar next door. So if you're a light sleeper like me, don't expect to get any decent sleep before 2am! All in all though, not too bad a hostel and I would stay there again if I need to. Hope the hot tub and sauna are working if I stay there again though!

I'm surprised what I have to read about the Village. We spent there three nights (two weeks ago) and we had no problems with drunken people, the accomodation system or the cleanliness. It isn't the most quiet street/night entertainment and the non-existing kitchen is a minus. But most guest were friendly and, most important, the hostel was quiet cheap for english prices (10,50pound a night with breakfast).

Some of these reviews seem overly harsh. Backpacking isn't about 5* service, that's what pricy hotels for. During my stay I got to hang out with really nice travellers from all over the world, and the bar downstairs lets you get to meet the locals too :) Breakfast was included in the price, and whilst it was fairly basic, there was the option of paying more to upgrade.

This hostel is all about having a fun time - where else can you find a rooftop hot tub (free of charge) and sauna?!

Well I have stayed in a lot of hostels in various places around the world, I don't expect a five-star hotel but this was pretty bad..

Showers and toilets are dirty, no kitchen or anything at all, the bar is good in that it has alcohol, but it seems to also be open to non-guests and plays awful music at loud volume in the evening.. To be honest, I wouldn't have wanted to befriend many of the people at the bar. It was like a scaled-down version of your typical cheesy meat-market type club, with the people to match. Let me clarify that last comment, if you like watching drunken idiots making clumsy moves on equally drunk girls, or are a frat boy/townie/chav/yob, or think Shane Warne genuinely respects women then this might appeal to you.

I have been in other hostels with bars and they were much cooler than this. So not so easy to meet decent people as some reviews suggest I would imagine, although that was not an issue for me as I was only there to meet friends in London.

Staff were ok, but not exactly friendly, so don't expect too much there.

Location is good, tube is nearby and there is a small supermarket (Sainsburys) across the road.

Beds are average. It is loud at night (due to road and bar) so if you want a quiet place then don't go here. I wouldn't have minded the noise if it been caused by a nice bar.

Check-out is at 10am and you have to dump your keycard, which means you then can't get to the showers, common room, or anywhere else except the bar once you have checked out. I asked about this and the girl at the counter reluctantly gave me a card that was set to only work for 30 minutes!! I ended up just tailgating people in and out, so it was pretty pointless and annoying. What if you had a flight at like 2am? Do they expect you to pay for another night? No other place I have been to has been this bad about letting you into communal areas after checking out.

Anyway, I reckon there has to be somewhere better, so go there not here!

Did I mention I didn't like the bar?

So loud!! If you plan on getting ANY sleep then this is definitely not the place to stay. If you're looking for somewhere to party, this is probably the place. There's a bar right under the hostel which will either make or break your night. It's not in a bad location (5 min walk to the tub station). It's very expensive compared to the rest of Europe (but so is London) considering the place you're getting.

i have stayed at this hostel three times... and a mistake each time. the booking system is a joke you never get what you ordered online and i have stayed here three times. the staff are rude, slow and always make mistakes. the spa is full of beer, plastered frat boys and well considering the amount of f"king going on in this place who knows what else...who wants to know.... its gross, the shower is cold and is nothing above a dribble... and to make it even worse its a ripoff, there are cheaper places to stay... so stay there...not here`

That pretty much about says it. Guys, go somewhere that you will be treated as a valued guest and not a walking wallet. You have to pay for lockers, you pay through the nose for internet, the bar is expensive (even by london standards), the breakfast is a joke, the staff are just not interested, the rooms are spartan and the building is in a shitty area.

I stayed at St Christophers other building on the same street the Orient Espresso and it was great and then on my way back to Canada I stayed in thier main building ...Al I can say is that I was there for a week and wish it had been longer as I had a brilliant time in the pub and met lots of new friends...and chilled the next day in the chillout room to get over a hangover, I like the fact that with this chain you get the same standards in any of thier hostels but each one has its on plus and minuses ...but the Village definatly had all the things I needed including staff who made sure I was ok... and the entertainment was great, one night stand up comedy, another Open Mike bands etc....and a (I blush red) Kariaoki night where I embarised my self ...I will be back...

This was the first hostel I'd ever stayed in when I did a 12-country backpacking trip through Europe.

St. Christopher's was definitely commercialized. Ads lined the walls, brochures and handbills in stacks in the reception area, you get the idea. The key card worked for the first two days, then had to be fixed at the front desk every day afterward. Lockers were available for rent, but it's cheaper to bring your own lock and shove your backpack into the locker under your bed.

The 8-bed room I stayed in was clean. The room doors slam, so bring earplugs! The showers are either push-button or handheld. You'll have to shower with one hand that's either holding down the button or holding the showerhead.

London is a popular place to work, so a lot of the people I met there were using the hostel as temporary housing. When I was there, many of the guests were more interested in finding a job than socializing with other travelers. I didn't make as many friends as I expected.

There's a small grocery store across the street and small restaurants nearby. If I were to stay in London again, I'd find a hostel closer to Leicester Square. The theatre district was my favorite area to wander around in. There's a bunch of booths where you can buy half-price, theatre tickets. The catch is that you can only see the shows available the day of purchase. The TKTS booth that looks like small clock tower is the only official booth of the Society of London Theatre.

Tip: take the Tube to Westminster station for a cheap way to see Westminster Abbey, Parliament, and Big Ben. Much cheaper than doing a London tour.
