My friend and I stayed at Once Brewed for one night in October 2005. The hostel is beside the Once Brewed visitor centre. The location and scenery all around the hostel is beautiful. It is popular with people exploring the many Roman history places and also walkers and cyclists. Booking and check in were good and efficient. The dorm room had six beds, but it was not very spacious and there was no shelving or storage space. I found the beds uncomfortable, but my friend did not. The lounge was very comfortable and spacious, with internet access. There was a good selection of local information. The guy at reception was very knowledgeable about the area and its history. We did not have an evening meal there, but we had breakfast. It was okay, reasonably good selection of cereals, fruit etc. and cooked items, but not many cooked items for vegetarians. There was also a well equiped self catering kitchen. Everywhere was very clean. The staff and other guests were very friendly.

On the flipside, public transport access is possible but not extensive. Bus AD122 runs in the summer and stops at the hostel, and it links all of the major Roman History sites and Newcastle. Otherwise, its four miles away from Bardon Mill, where is limited bus and train access. There are good car parking facilities at the hostel.

The Twice Brewed inn, a short walk away, serves very good meals. The visitor centre information stated that the hostel was called 'Once Brewed' because when Lady Trevelyn, who was teetotal, opened it she said she hoped nothing stronger than tea would be brewed there. The Twice Brewed inn apparently got its name because visiting soldiers found the brew so weak they ordered it to be brewed again.

I would go again and I would recommend Once Brewed YHA.
