I stayed at Kielder hostel for one night with my friend. Five stars is not enough for this place. Where do I begin? Right from when my friend booked, which was done very efficiently and in a friendly way, to our check out was great. Justin and Angie who run the hostel are very friendly and really run it well. The hostel is very clean everywhere. The bedroom was well furnished with individual bedside reading lights and solid pine bunks that don't wobble when people move, and proper top sheets rather than those annoying sleep sheets. The showers are roomy with a drying and dressing area, and they were hot and powerful. Meals are excellent. My friend asked if they did porridge at breakfast and although they don't, they cooked it especially for her. They also cooked evening meals especially for us. The menu is extensive with excellent vegetarian choices and a really good selection of wines and beers. Portions were huge and the food was wonderful. Angies veggie lasagne was memorable! There is also a well stocked self catering kitchen. The lounge had a widescreen TV, DVD player and DVD's, and an excellent selection of books, magazines and games. It was very quiet so I cannot comment on the social atmosphere. The only drawback is that for non drivers, public transport is limited, though it is not impossible. A postbus runs between Hexham and Kielder daily Monday to Saturday, for now. The hostel surroundings are incredibly beautiful and there is loads to do and see, especially if you like the outdoors, with Kilder water and forest, and lots of cycling, walking and watersports opportunities. But, if you are not driving, getting to certain parts of Kielder water is not easy. There is no mobile phone reception there - it was bliss not having other peoples boring conversations forced on me. This is excellent value for money. A private room for two was under £32. Now I am home, all I want to do is return to Kielder YHA! I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
