BUG review
Salisbury's YHA hostel is in a 200-year-old building with a modern annex. It is newly renovated and very clean. Facilities include a good kitchen, a small TV lounge and a quiet common room on the ground floor.

Absolutely crap.

Pros: The location.
Cons: The inmates + the self-catering kitchen.

I stayed a couple of days in that hostel for Christmas 2008. First, the staff tried to get me to buy mince pies + coffee, and to book for the 'Christmas meal'. Then, I found out that about half the guests were mentally sick people whose stay had been organised by their social workers. They were no carers, so the patients were left to their own devices, i.e. annoying the other guests. Some of the men acted in a very inappropriate manner (esp. the one I nicknamed 'King Lear') and a young female foreign student left before the end of her stay because he had attempted to assault her. She was planning to complain to the police. I shared my dorm with one normal lady and a patient. The sick lady stank so much that we had to leave the window open at night!!! It was bitterly cold and after I had left the hostel I developed a sore throat and a high temperature and I had to take to bed (and take sickness leave). The kitchen is one of the most filthy I've ever seen: I was suprised not to see cockroaches. There are no fridges/ovens, most of the cookers aren't working, the sinks leak and/or are blocked, and there are no decent pots and pans to cook with. Showers extremely run down as well. The windows would need replacing and there is no proper ventilation/fan extractors. As a result the whole hostel is damp, cold and clammy. A very, very bad memory, all the more since that was supposed to be my Christmas break.
