I have been in Vana Tom in 2004 and returned there in Dec 2007.. I have to say there is a huge improvement.. Staff is very helpful and kind, the service overall is very good, comfortable rooms.. Clean! The housekeeping does great job, but most customers do not try to preserve this cleanliness..Wifi everywhere, there is station computer as well..Renovated shower rooms and WC rooms are much, much better than before!Kitchen very well equiped, all utensils u might need are there!Free DVD rent, DVDs can be watched in the kitchen..

Stayed there for one night, couldn't wait to get out of it. The dorm has 12 bunk beds with no lockers. There were stains in EVERY pillows and mattresses. Backpacks, shoes, books, drinks, food were all over the place. The shower was clogged. Staffs were USELESS and VERY unfriendly. No backpack storage either. Breakfast was disguisting. The only good thing is the location. Not worth staying!

i stayed here for three nights ,its right in the old town and the showers on the top floor are still crap(non existant really and the rooms dirty 15 beds 3 high bunks and no where for your luggage stay there only if desperate and the rudest staff in the history of the world but they do give you fresh sheets now and a good breakfast

Yeah, the location is perfect. But you have to take into account that Tallinn is a small city so, if the hostel is a little out of the center it's not a problem. Overcrowded dirty dorms and the bathrooms were not clean neither... and showers without hot water! Next time in Tallinn I won't come back there.

The hostel is located right in the middle of Tallinn's beautiful old town. The staff are fairly nice. But that's about it. I've stayed in a lot of hostels during my travels and this was one of the worst. The rooms are crowded, the beds are disgusting. There were yellow stains all over the mattress and pillow and I even found blood stains! I asked about getting new sheets and was promised that they would be delivered - they never were. The showers: a tiny trickle of cold water. I ended up using the shower marked "personnel only" - the water was still cold but at least it flowed at a decent rate. And on top of it all, it's not that cheap.

I've stayed in the Vana Tom a few months ago in a dorm room. The location is excellent - it's in the old town. You'll find a lot of bars and cafes in the neighborhood and there's also a cheap restaurant in the same building. Cheap here is in comparision to the other restaurants in the old town. Many cruise ships stop in Tallinn so most restaurants are overprized.The breakfast in the hostel is quite good and we hadn't a single problem with the showers. The staff in the Vana Tom is just great. I spent about five minutes at the front desk where they tried to teach me how to pronunciate tänan (thanks) - but I think I'm a hopeless case ;)The only think I've missed was a nice common room to sit down and chat.

We had a private room (for 2 people, although it had 4 beds in it) i think it only cost us a few Euros more.The showers and bathrooms were fine, the water wasnt the hottest i've seen but was fine. The reception staff are friendly and speak english and the breakfast isnt bad at all.Location is fantastic, right near some good bars ("the bar with no name" "Hollywood" nightclub which had excellent funky house playing the night we went and very friendly clubbers.) Also you are right in the old town which means no having to get taxis or public transport (which starts to add up, even in estonia)There are signs for a Striptease bar upstairs, but i dont think we saw anyone going up and below there is a great resto/bar that serves cheap meals and drinks.I would defn stay there again.

In general I liked this place, but perhaps that is because I met some nice people there. The dorms are packed (3 tiers bunks) but everyone was quite conscientious and no one was making noise or bothering people. The kitchen is small and needs a few more utensils but pretty OK. The staff were friendly which does make a difference.

I have just returned from staying in vana tom. we were there for one night and I would describe it as a hell hole. Smelly, overcrowded dorms, three working showers, and the place is dirty and grotty. location is the only plus factor. Better off to stay in the academic hostel. Its cheaper, and really nice. IR and Euro Taxis only cost about 50EEK. Overall much more enjoyable.

Clean and friendly, good shower rooms and a well run hostel. Not much wrong with it really, free breakfast and generally tidy. There is a strip club above it though, but do not be put off by that. We coulod hear it or see any problems from it.
