I stayed at Mittelharth for 4 nights in July 2004, four nights because I'd prepaid my room upon arrival not because I enjoyed my stay. I was in a 8 bed dorm room that I shared with one other person on only a few of the nights, I mostly had the room to myself however the rest of the hostel was overflowing with a German school group. There was poor security, the staff refused to give me a key to the room so I had to leave it unlocked when I went into town or had a shower. They would lock the rooms during lockout and then give me a hard time when I'd have to ask for the key afterwards (they claimed it must be unlocked when they had forgotten to do so). The shared bathrooms were incredibly slippery, water seemed to run out of the showers and pool in the centre of the room. The breakfasts were good, there are decent social areas like the TV room however few other solo travelers to chat with. The worst part of my stay was the intense heat and humidity every night. The windows in my room only opened a few inches so it was impossible to get the rooms to cool down and I ended up not sleeping for more than a few hours each night.

While the hostel is a manageable walk from the train station and tourist centre, the area it is in is very residential with no restaurants or shops (I ended up getting food at a gas station one night as a last resort). Colmar is a very cute little town but I'd recommend trying to find somewhere closer to the tourist centre to stay or take a day trip out from Strasbourg instead.
