Belle-Ile is a paradise for walkers and bird-watchers!, August 22, 2006
Reviewer: cristian from Paris, France

Pros: Good starting and arrival point for round-walk of the island
Cons: Damp and chilly in the winter

Stayed there in February 2003 (walked round Belle Ile in 5 days). Guy at the reception a keen bird-watcher, and knows his island like the back of his hand, enjoyed very much talking to him. Within easy reach of the harbour (15' on foot I think). Built on the grounds of a former penitentiary for children and teenagers!!!

I stayed at this hostel in February 2003, before beginning a 4-day walk round the island on the GR 34, and at the end of the trip.

The hostel is very value for money, even though it was cold in the winter. The kitchen is very large and convenient and open at all time, and the young man at the desk was very friendly and knew a lot about birds and plants on the island. Try to check whether he doesn't organize guided tours!

What I didn't like was that the left luggage was a room which stayed unlocked all day : everybody can go in and out.

Really a nice place to stay before moving on to Sauzon or Locmaria!

I stayed here in September, 2002, and am coming back. And that is the opinion I heard from others in the outdoor communal picnic area, from young twenty-somethings to seasoned 60+ adventurers. It's clean, secure, friendly, affordable, and beautiful. Laundry facilities, a recycling reading library (take one, leave one), spiffy rooms, full cafe-bar, communal kitchen for those who cook their own, friendly multilingual staff, and guests of all ages. Belle Isle is a place of unusual beauty, and renting a bicycle would be a great idea for those who can take the time to explore. Travelers who think hostels are gritty dens for the short-cash set, think again. This is elegant.
