Unfortunately this hostel is the only one in Montpellier, so I had to stay there. I wish I had known about this website before going.

1) There is No visible sign for the hostel so I ended up walking past it and getting lost first

2) It has a dirty feel to it

3) The rooms are small, dirty sheets, filthy blanket.

3a) Lockout from 10am -3pm everyday so the staff can "clean" the rooms. haha gimme a break.. there is no cleaning going on

4) Rude staff wouldnt refund my second nights money when i wanted to leave after the first hellish night. I basically paid 28 euros for one night in this shithole

5) Do yourself a favour and skip this hostel and city altogether.

I am not a whiner either, I have been backpacking now for going on 5 months in Europe, and this is the only hostel that I have hated with a passion.

I only stayed here for a couple of nights. It's an official hostel, so you know what that means.....lockout and curfew. That is the only bad part about it in my oppinion. It's nestled on the corner of a charming cobblestone streets, with lots to do and see. It's quite a large hostel with 2-3 stories, game room, TV room, and lounge area. Definately has a homie feel to it.

It's quite cheap as well, something like 10 Euros a night. As far as the city of Montpellier goes, ah pure charm. Definately a nice European touch.

Overall, a great price for a good hostel.

This youth hostel isn't very good, but it's ok for short stays. I stayed two nights here while looking for an apartment in Montpellier, and was really happy to leave. My boyfriend was put in a dormitory with NINE other people, very unpleasant and smelly. I had a bit better experience (in a room of six people), but the beds were crowded and the ventilation poor. Also, the showers are really cold, the pillows are awful, and many of the rooms are just above a noisy tramway line or the inner courtyard with people talking loudly. There are just a couple of double rooms (which you can't specifically reserve), so if you're travelling as a couple prepare to sleep apart. There's magnetic keys to get into the rooms that only work occasionally and you have to recode them each day (something they never told me when I checked in).

Breakfast is simple but good, and there's a nice big lounge and places to hang out. As well, the hostel centrally located in a really great area with lots of little restaurants, close to the tramway.

Basically, this place isn't for fussy travellers. It's unpleasant, but bearable.

Plus points:

1. Centrally located.

2. Pretty good opening hours.

3. Not that many people per dorm (I was in a room for 3).

Bad points:

1. They have a massive problem with petty theft here. To get round this they have a baggage room with electronic lockers, but you get charged .50 euros *every time you shut the door* and it's on the floor below most rooms, at the end of the corridor. This is fine for leaving your bag during the day, but not great in the evening when you need to get into your bag every few minutes for night clothes, toothbrush, guide book etc. If you're staying here, though, forget the money and inconvenience and use it. Take all your stuff down there even if you're only leaving the room to go and brush your teeth, because if you don't then you're likely to get something nicked.

2. The staff aren't the friendliest I've come across and you often get queues at reception. I got my camera nicked, and they weren't as nice and helpful as they could have been about it. While I understand their position, their first thought was to cover themselves by saying I should have locked everything up (I only left my stuff unattended to go to the bathroom). When I reported it at the police station, the police said that the youth hostel should have called them out immediately, even if it was only for a camera. In fact, the hostel positively discouraged me from reporting it, saying I could go if I wanted but it wouldn't help. They were right about that, but that's not surprising given that standard procedure in the hostel is for them to ask the suspect. Quite rightly, the hostel doesn't have the right to detain anybody or search people's stuff, but this basically means that they're telling the suspect that they are under suspicion, and then giving them the opportunity to hide whatever they've taken.

3. Of all the showers in the hostel, only 1 has hot water, which is great during a heatwave but not at other times.

4. There are no laundry facilities, and none of the sinks have plugs, so it's really difficult to do laundry by hand.

5. Breakfast was ming - stale bread, cornflakes, coffee, water and milk. Be warned, if you book online then they raise the price by 3 euros and tell you breakfast is included. All hostels do this but I really object when breakfast is so rotten.

6. Entrance to the rooms is through magnetic swipe cards, which are really temperamental and almost never work first time. You have to spend about 5 mins in the corridor every time trying to open the door, assuming the card works at all. You also have to have it recoded every evening, but they don't tell you that when you arrive. Not long after I was there they managed to spill whisky over the recoders, so that nobody could get in. Their solution? You go down to reception, take the master key, run upstairs and open your room, leave the door open while you return the master key, then go back up. Apparently they had even worse problems than usual with theft, and it still hadn't been fixed a couple of days later.

7. It's definitely not the cleanest hostel I've stayed in. It's just been renovated but you'd never guess from the broken shutters and general state of the place.

Generally, I can imagine much worse hostels, but stolen camera aside, this was the worst of the 9 hostels I stayed in.

The place was dirty. It looked like it hadnt been cleaned for 40 years. Everything looked as if it would fall apart. The bathroom was dirty and stinky. Not a pleasant stay. The only upside isits central location. You could probably find a nice cheap little hotel for a little bit more. This place ws unpleasant. No security. No hygiene. Staff moderatly friendly but tended to ignore you a while before speaking to you. Stay here at your peril. I am not joking.

This is by far the worst hostel that I have ever stayed in and I have had the misfortune of staying in places that had rats! It is too bad that it is the only hostel in the city. The staff is very unhelpful. There in absolutly no security in the rooms. But the worst part of the whole place are the rooms. The beds feel like they are going to fall apart. The 'pillow' that you are provided it actually an old peice of cloth stuffed with rags. I was there for two nights and there were bed bugs. We woke up covered in large welts on our legs and back. The rooms are dirty. Most of the sinks in the bathroom didn't work, they were trying to fix them, but they sent old work men into the womans bathroom with no warning in the middle of the morning to fix it. Too bad I was in the shower and all of my clothes were out with the workmen. They didn't seem to care. I couldn't wait to get out of this place. Would love to go back to the city, but I would never, ever stay the night again!

While the rooms were fairly standard, and the hostel bunk-beds were typical, the light in our four-person room did not work, and requests for repairs (made, I note, in fluent French) went unanswered. The showers were cold, as there was only one shower with hot water in the entire hostel and that one was constantly occupied. A central location and late curfew made it easy to enjoy the great nightlife in Montpellier, but opt for a cheap hotel instead, unless you like bracing icy showers in the morning!
