BUG Review
Knowledgeable and friendly staff are a perk at this brilliant hotel-turned-hostel in a quaint and convenient part of Montmartre. The rooms are clean and airy, all with en suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and television. Security could be improved, as there is no luggage room or lockers (causing a build-up of backpacks in the lobby), but it is in a very safe neighbourhood and has a relaxed atmosphere, camera surveillance, and keys for each guest. Besides the lack of a good common area and minimal kitchen conveniences, it offers free Wi-Fi internet and is a good option for the budget traveller who is looking for a clean and quiet place to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Breakfast is standard bread, jam, and cereal, with unlimited coffee and tea.

The only thing i didn´t like being there was that two nights it was allowed a extrange guy that apparently was a homeless or a drunk man, i think they must select the people who is going to get into the hostel, but despite that, I had no problems, i met some very interesting people from australia and from russia, and another thing was that there were no place for keeping your pack, nor a room neither a looker.

but as I told before, just go, if you are afraid or you have no experience going to hostels I recommend you to go, it´s ok, dont worry be hugies!!! hehehehe

We stayed in Caulaincourt Hostel for 5 days and I definitely stay there again when I come to Paris next time! It's very close to the Metro station, central on Montmartre close to Sacre Ceur and Moulin Rouge. The rooms are small but very nice and clean and were cleaned every day during lock out from 11-16. The staff were very friendly, helpful and spoke good English. The breakfeast was also good. But the kitchen was very small (but a social meeting place :D) and lacking in equipment, but the staff bought us some new things when asked. There is a curfew at 2 am :( The lobby was always full of young backpackers and the general athmosphere was good with people from all over the world. All and all probably one of the best hostels in Paris!

Good value city hostel - Plesant safe location close to Metro, June 11, 2007

First let me say I would be happy to return to this hostel. It is close to the Metro and the MontMartre area is a very pleasant stroll away. So it is a good base for a tourist wanting to see Paris. The day time lock out policy restricts you to using the common areas between 11am & 4pm - but then you would be out exploring the city at that time. I sensed the rooms are of varying size and standard - mine was a 4 share with a bathroom - although there are larger dorms without private facilities. Nice touches are the included breakfast and the 30 minute internet usage given on booking in.

It is a interesting buiding built onto the side of the hill - the wooden starcases are narrow and can be noisy - as was some of the plumbing. It was being decorated whilst I was there (end May 07). The breakfast room can be cramped at peak times. The area for self catering is small and basic -- fridge / microwave.

Reception staff were friendly.... it always helps if you are friendly and greet them as well.

Security well I was happy enough - Ok you don't have lockers available - but the rooms are lockable and they only let out 1 key per room - access to the hostel is via the front and the reception desk seemed to be always manned by responsible people. The surrounding neighbourhood is well maintained and appeared very safe.

Overall a well run hostel.

Absolutely disgusting! don't stay here! My mum, sister and I had to book a single room and a double and we were in the hotel part (it was even worse than the grosest hostel!) first of all we were annoyed because the double room had a double bed plus a single so we were paying for the single room when we could have all fitted in the double. Also the Single room had 3 single beds- weird. anyway both rooms absolutely stunk and we felt very unsafe in them, sleazy staff and windows that anyone could have gotten into. the bathroom door has a glass window from top to bottom so you can see in and we looked around for hidden cameras. anyway my sister and i were staying in the single room and we discovered that none of the sheets had been cleaned. there were hairs on them and stains it was disgusting. this was later at night and we didn't feel safe going to complain so we all slept in the double bed because it wasn't AS dirty. there is nowhere for people to hang here. the reception area has the internet with a couch so people hang there with their alcohol so whilst your trying to find someplace else to stay in paris you have drunks sleazing onto you. no common room to hang in. Do not give this place one cent of your money!

I stayed at the Hotel Caulaincourt Square in March, 2005. As mentioned in the other reviews, great location and great price! The desk staff was friendly and spoke decent english. There are 3 free internet computers in the lobby, high speed connections....great for sending emails fast, etc. The visitors were all young travelers, mostly american from what I saw. The room was small but with a nice street view. The shower was hot with strong pressure! the bed was ok but not spectacular. Definitely have the breakfast, nice cheap way to start the day. I stayed in a single room. This would be a good place for couples or single travelers seeking a separate room. Beware the 2 a.m. curfew. It's kind of tucked around the corner off the main street (get off the subway, go up the stairs, turn right on rue caulaincourt, walk about two blocks, there is a nice cafe on your right....just tucked around the corner is the hotel). I also stayed at the Regyn's Montmartre which is very close and has a Eiffel Tower view for a bit more money. I will probably stay at both again when I return.

I stayed four nights here in June, and would stay here again. The staff was helpful and spoke perfect English. The rooms were clean, but the bathroom could use a little work. This hostel is close to the metro, and in a beautiful neighborhood with a great bakery, grocery store and laundry very close by.

First off, this was the first hostel I ever stayed in, so my views may be a little skewed. But looking back I'm glad it was my first. :) Stayed in a small room w/6 beds, but usually only 3 or 4 were filled. Super cool people stayed there. Book with STA Travel, you'll get the breakfast free. Bathroom en suite, plus small TV. Great view outside. And Montmartre ... wow. But ... get ready for stairs, baby. From the metro, definitely take the elevator outside. Then you have two more sets up to Rue Caulaincourt, then some tiny spiral ones down to your room. Looking back, the worst thing I would say was the lack of a common room area to meet people. It is more like a hotel than a hostel. But the front desk people were good, spoke English. Beds were comfy, though I did find some hairs on my bottom sheet (yuck). And make sure the connecting stop on the Metro is operational, lest you take the wrong line and end up lost in Paris on your first day (which I was). Anyhoo, Paris is everything people say it is, so you pretty much have to go. :)

Definitely a Hotel and NOT a Hostel, October 27, 2003

I stayed here for several nights in late March 2003, and I'd have to agree with most of what I've already read in other reviews. This place is okay for couples but there are certainly better options for singles and/or groups.

BAD NEWS:

The hostel-style dorm room was way too small for three bunk beds and/or six people, and sharing the one room key with strangers caused problems. Ensuite shower was tiny (by American standards) although it did have a curtain for more modest folks. I was told the room was nonsmoking yet cigarette odor was everywhere (I have nothing against cigarettes in general, but I specifically asked for a nonsmoking room and was told I'd get one). I also noticed an ant problem in one corner. While the front door is locked at 2 AM, security otherwise is sketchy; I watched people walk freely in and out of the hostel without needing to check in or something similar (as a female travelling alone, this was definitely a concern).

GOOD NEWS:

The view from the shoddy dorm room was fantastic but did require neck strain--I'd assume (but can't confirm) other rooms on the same floor has just as nice a view. The hotel was located within easy walking distance of the Lamarck Caulaincourt Metro stop and several cafes and shops. Also within walking distance but involving a hill climb was Sacre Couer and a fabulous view of Paris. The front desk staff spoke wonderful English and was very accommodating when I asked to change rooms. While I did have to vacate the room during the day for cleaning, I could leave my luggage in the lobby (but it wasn't secure--glad I had a bike lock!). The double room I moved into for my final night there was simple yet nice. The shower/toilet was down the hall, but the room and sheets were clean and I did have a TV and sink in-room.

I'd honestly give this place 2.5 stars if I followed the rating scale to a "T": it was okay, but it wasn't great and was certainly disappointing after my stay at another hostel in the city (BVJ Quartier Latin, which I left in search of cheaper rooms--should've stayed!). I'd recommend this place for couples only and only as a last resort.

I have heard mixed reviews of the dorms in this place, but can't comment as I did not stay in one. I stayed in a single room for four nights. The room was clean and very large, with a washbasin and even a TV with CNN. Certainly nothing fancy, but for what I payed it was excellent value. Showers/bathrooms were clean and I never had to wait in line. Very close to the metro station, and just minutes walk from the Sacre Cour. Plenty of shops/bakeries/conveniences in the area. Highly recommended for thos who want a decent budget hotel.
