BUG Review
This hostel is a bit run down with an institutional feel. The lack of common areas plus the curfew, lockout and the school groups that stay here mean that it doesn't have any of the social atmosphere that independent travellers are looking for. It is located in a fairly central area.
Price Dorm bed €20
Price includes breakfast Prices are in local currency and are inclusive of all taxes.

I spent in this hostel 4 nights with some friends... and it was really great.maybe ít´s true that showers and bathrooms are mixed and no very comfortable but, it is a very funny hostel, you can stay with your friends all night in the common room, and you can make a lot of friends!!It is a terrible hostel to people with money... but it is an amazing hostel to backpackers and young people, cheap, with breakfast and friendly!! (no the staff, but people, is fantastic)so... If you are looking for a youth hostel like this... don´t be stupid and visit Le maison international des jeunes!

I stayed here mid May 2004. I agree mostly with the other reviews: a decent place to stay if you can't find anywhere else (always availability there and 20 euros a night). Travelling alone as a female, I felt very uncomfortable walking back to the hostel and made sure to get there before it got dark. Yes, institutional feel and showers not too great. The room I stayed in had two levels inside, and the staircase was quite noisy so anyone using it woke everyone up. Breakfast is typical of all French hostels with the jam, bread, and coffee. Not a very welcoming atmosphere. If you are looking for a cheap hostel, I'd recommend the Auberge de Jeunesse, a 10 minute walk away, although reservations are a must there.

In college and law school, while visiting Paris or studying at the Bibliotheque Nationale, I spent months here in total. The thing that struck me most of all is that the same people have worked here year after year after year. They even have the same lowly jobs. It's strangely unchanged. The dark-complected breakfast lady has always been rude (the "Bread Nazi" one might call her) in a sort of angry stepmother way. If you're mean back to her, she will back down and become nicer. Her "Igor-like" assistant (the head janitor) is a simple, nice man (though slow and somewhat creepy looking, I think the Bread Nazi terrorizes him). The other staff have their good and bad moments, although the proprietor lady, the distinguished-looking brunette who was young and attractive the first time I was there in 1996, can be really quite nice and accommodatable, especially if you speak French. I've become used to them and feel sad for them in a way. Their implacability is so very French, so very Sartrian. I have witnessed American and Canadian backpackers acting unforgivingly rude and obnoxious to them for no cause. So, if they come-off as rude at first, it may be understandable. In the summer months, groups of French school-children will often fill the place. The building is old, shabby and institutional, yes. The neighborhood is not the best, but Paris is an expensive city, relatively safe for a city so large, and the Metro Faidherbe-Chaligny is only a 2 minute walk away. That little garden courtyard, which is actually on the roof of the dining room, is full of rabbits, which is kind of unique. There are many rules here, but none are enforced except the 2:00am curfew. If you need a place on short notice in Paris for a reasonable price, it's not too bad.

The hostel I was staying at did not have availability for one night of my 5 day stay. The only place in town i could get into was MIJ...there's a reason they always have rooms available! The room we stayed in was damp and moldy smelling, the bathrooms were icky, the front desk staff was rude. We didn't even stick around for breakfast, we got out of there as soon as we could. The area is creepy, too.Do not confuse the MIJ with the MIJE!! MIJE is great!

I read the previous reviews and I was prepared for the worst. Allright, the elevator was out of order, the breakfast staff was shouty and rude ( but it also made us laugh for the same cause) and the bathrooms were a little bit shabby. But... when you are to stay in this hotel and just sleep there it is not so bad at all: it is situated in a quiet street in the Bastille-area, which is very attractive with its many restaurants, little bars, pubs and disco-bars, and the subway is nearby. Conclusion: if you have little money, it is an alternative.

The hostel I made a reservation at lost my reservation and this hostel had a space. The rooms I stayed in were never full so I think they might always have a place available. The beds were (mercifully) not bunk beds, but were creaky and uncomfortable. There was some question as to the cleanliness of the sheets which may or may not be changed every night, and the bathrooms reminded me why I bring thongs with me everywhere.Even if you stayed several nights, you often had to change rooms more than once because of the check in staff's strange arrangements. And the staff was rude... the breakfast staff in particular who actually yelled at people when they didn't decide whether they wanted tea or coffee quickly enough. (And the breakfast was not that good - hot drink, some bread and a small glass of juice)If you can get in somewhere else, then do so. Otherwise, this hostile hostel is not the worst place to stay, it's just not going to make your Paris stay a memorable one for the right reasons.

I agree the staff were pretty rude. They threatened to throw us out beccause someone left a phone message for us. (but that someone turned out to be a stalker from our previous seedy hotel, a different story entirely so I suppose we were lucky they were strict) The bathrooms were pretty gross and it looked like someone had been shaving a yak from all the hair in the sink. Also its in a bad part of town.

Unfortunetly, the Paris hostel i frequent was full, and they advised me to go to this one. the building itself was cold and institutional. it is a huge dormroom-like facility with small rooms , squeaky beds, and bathrooms on the same floor. the room, although tiny, was relatively clean and even had a window overlooking a verdent courtyard. the bathrooms were not very clean and the elevator was not working. these, however, were minor inconveniences compared to the rudeness of the staff. (except for a nice young man who was informative during the check in). the big disappointment is that there is no storing of luggage. my travelling companion and i stayed one night and the next day my friend wanted to leave his bag on my bed for the day since i was staying additional nights and he was taking a night train. the staff created such a scandal, that i finally had to ask for my money back for the additional nights i had paid. i can understand security concerns, but the episode was truly uncalled for.
