BUG Review
The next MIJE hostel is located just around the corner from the Fauconnier, and the rooms are basically identical: spacious, cosy and clean with en suite bathrooms. This building is also brimming with character; the stone entry opens to a large courtyard, and the two divisions are connected by wooden pathways on each floor. This hostel offers a restaurant for breakfast and dinner, but it also does not have a regular kitchen. Guests can still bring in their own food and eat together in the square, making for a fairly atmospheric setting.

I was looking forward to staying here after having a such a pleasant experience at MIJE-Fauconnier, but was really let down when I stayed at le Fourcy. I had a twin room that had an ensuite shower, but with no door to the shower area! Hanging a sheet worked fine, but c'mon!

Our beds kind of tilted backwards, and mine had a lot of hair all over the mattress. The sheet covered most of it but that was pretty gross. Also, it's really loud all night long. With the traffic nearby, and some door that constanly slammed shut, it's worth picking up some earplugs at the nearby pharmacy.

Otherwise, the shared bathrooms were always clean, and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful. It's in a nice area with a laundromat and internet cafe nearby, Franprix grocery, and lots of cafes too. Also, like the other MIJE's, it's within walking distance to the Notre Dame, and is just 2 minutes from the St Paul metro stop.

A friendly tip: don't eat dinner there. It's pretty gross and the cafeteria staff are rude. We tried it on 2 different occasions, and never finished eating it. Although temptingly cheap, even with the wine included, you won't be satisfied!

Everything I wanted to say has already been mentionned by the anonymous traveler from New Zealand just before... I agree with everything he said (except maybe the lingerie store, I havent seen it)

Its really a great place to stay and I would go back anytime.

I was hoping to get to meet some people while i was there because I was travelling alone, but that didn't happen. Everybody else who was there was part of a group (16-18 year old from Germany and Italy). I was sharing my dorm with two of the Italian girls, which was a bit ackward for them at first, but it was fine. The presence of those groups is really the only downside of the hostel.

The building is beautiful (I was told it was an old monastery), everything is super clean, even cleaner than my own place!

Breakfast is more than decent and is included in the price.

I would definately go there again, especially if im travelling with someone else.

A bit expensive but really worth it!

I arranged a stay for 5 nights for a group of six over New Year 2005. This hostel is an awesome place to stay if you are part of a group. If you are a lone backpacker, looking to meet up with fellow travellers, you may be frustrated. There are communal places to meet people eg in the breakfast room/ restaurant, but most of the visitors here are groups so you would still struggle. The hostel is on the quiet and narrow Rue de Fourcey in the Marias district. The Metro station St Pauls is literally about a 2 minute walk away, and is on line 1, which is the most central of the Metro lines; going past the Louvre, and for those arriving via Ryan Air, to the Porte Maillot station where the bus from Beauvais Airport drops you off. There are two small supermarkets just near the Metro station from where you can get your necessary food and alcohol supplies. (however, you are not allowed to imbibe alcohol in the hostel, although that didn't stop us early on New Years eve.) There are also several reasonable Kebab shops and a bakery nearby. For those travelling with a partner, there is a very nice (ie not tacky and cheap, but decent and expensive) lingerie shop on the northern corner of Rue de Fourcey landmarking the street if you are coming from the Metro. The hostel itself is 5 floors built around a central courtyard - villa-like in design, with very cool tiled and wooden stairs. We were given a room to ourselves which was a split level, the second floor reached by a cool spiral staircase. It was spotlessly clean and well aired. The beds each had reading lights so you could do stuff around your bed without turning the main light on. There were massive floor to ceiling windows looking over the cobbled back streets that you could open up, and a large wooden table. There was plenty of space to hang coats, shirts etc. There were no self-catering facilities however, which was a downside for us. There was a very decent shower, and sink area, which was nice, although not private (need to dry and change in the shower). Toilets were outside the room on the landing. The security is like a hotel; you are given a card-key, which you swipe at the door (so remember to take it with you when you go to the toilet!). The main entrance is guarded by a large solid gate, with a voice intercom. There is also a free communal baggage room, which is kept locked, and is video monitored. (but the rooms are more than big enough to keep your baggage next to your bed, so this is more of a waiting to check in/out facility.) If you are arriving after 10am you MUST call ahead on the day and confirm otherwise they may give your reservation away. They do take online bookings on their website (http://www.mije.com/) but we were able to book by email and telephone (make sure you get a booking confirmation number). Breakfast (croissant, and a baguette, with tea/coffee/orange juice) is included in the price and is served between 7 and 10am in the restaraunt, which is down beneath ground level. It has skylights so it's not dark and is actually quite large and nice. The breakfast staff were lovely and let us have more than one baguette and croissant if there were enough. I don't remember if they accepted credit cards or not, but there is a cash machine and a bank near the Metro station. We paid 27euros pp per night for our room, which is on the expensive side for hostels, but is actually really good for the location. The money you save elsewhere you actually spend paying for the metro to get around, whereas you can walk to most places from this hostel, which is by far the best way to experience Paris. Notre Dame is about 5 mins walk away. The Latin quarter about ten. The Louvre about 15-20. We walked to the Eiffel Tower, and it took about an hour, but you get to walk through some very cool parts of the city, and I would recommend it to taking the Metro. There is a 1am curfew, but they have a security guard on all night, so you can stay out longer if you let them know what time you'll be back. There is a 10:30 - 3 lockout (flexible) where staff come in and make the beds etc. If I were going back to Paris with a group, I would stay here again.

This has to be one of the best hostels I've been to. I stayed here for 5 nights and found it nice, clean and fun. It's extremely well located, Notre Dame is 5 minutes walk away and it is situated in the Malais district making it excellent for bars and restaurants. The nearest Metro stop is 100m up the road making the whole of Paris available within half an hour.

I paid the extra euro to get a 3-bed room. The room was large and had single beds well spaced out, handy if you happen to share your room with the dreaded snorer. It also included a wash-basin and shower within the room.

The hostel includes a large communal garden area which makes it great for meeting your fellow hostellers. This is not a party hostel though, the curfew at 1am precludes this. However, if you want a nice clean hostel where you can get a decent nights sleep after a long day sightseeing come here.

Good location, close to a metro stop (about 1 block) nice clean rooms - mine had 2 showers and 1 toilet for 6 girls - but the courtyard which could be social was filled with a school group of 13-year olds....so I moved after just one night, and the price of 27 euros plus 2.50 membership for the first night was pretty steep, even for Paris. If you've got friends with you and a few extra euros stay here, but if you're looking to meet people try Jules Ferry.

Originally called ahead and made a reservation at Maubisson, but when I arrived was told they were full, so the gentleman at the front desk called Le Fourcy and arranged for two bed there for my friend and I. He then gave me a map and instructed me on how to get there.

Not far from the metro, this place was exactly as advertised, an old monastary (actually saw a monk on my way there!). Although we had a room on the top floor and opted to walk up there, it was worth the walk. We were in a 4 bed room with a shower and sink - toilet was door away. We flew out early the next morning so we didn't experience much of the social scene, although we had a nice dinner in the Marais district, which looked to be a very socialable area.

Definitely a thumbs up, worth the extra $.

Clean, Central & Courteous, November 22, 2003

I highly recommend this hostel. I stayed here for 3 nights in a triple room in November 2003.

The hostel is built around a small couryard. The staff are helpful (willing & able to speak English), the rooms are comfortable & well equipped (a shower & sink in our room with toilets just down the hall) and the location is ideal (10-15 min. walk to the Louvre & other sites in the heart of the city).

The hostel is also very close to a supermarket and an array of farily cheap Chinese/Japanese eateries.

Breakfast (a baguette, a croissant, tea/coffe & orange juice) is served from 7 to just before 10 and is included in the price. There is a 1 a.m. curfew.

Rue de Fourcy is a fairly annonymous street so it can be hard to locate. While trying to find it, I asked a few locals and even they didn't know . The easiest way to get to is to get off at the St. Paul metro stop. Look for the 'Franprix' supermarket. As you face the supermarket, Rue de Fourcy is the street directly to the right of it.

The only problem I had with this hostel was when making a reservation. The hostel doesn't take credit card or online bookings so you have to phone.

The first time I phoned (about 10 days before I was arriving) I was told that they didn't take reservations for that far ahead.

The second time I phoned I was told that bookings were only taken between set times (9-12:30 & 1:30-4).

When you make the reservation, they also ask that if you expect to arrive after 12 noon to confirm your booking at noon on your arrival date.

While the staff I spoke were polite and fluent English speakers, 3 calls to reserve a room was frustrating.

Still, I'm glad I persisted. This is a fine hostel.
