BUG Review
Halfway down the bustling rue Mouffetard, the convivial Young & Happy is a good choice for the budget-conscious traveller looking for a room near the centre of the city. The market set up on the lower half of the street is famous with Parisians, and there are tons of cheap restaurants lining the sidewalks. The building itself is quite old and run down, but the décor is bright and inviting. The same can be said for the reception staff, who will gladly call to reserve you another hostel nearby (of your choice) if they are full when you arrive. They also suggest things to do in the city, including using the billiards hall across the street which is popular with locals. Rooms are simple with new mattresses, and some have en suite showers or toilets. Shared facilities are not as well-kept. The kitchen is small and ill-equipped and there is not a very nice lounge, but they are in the midst of renovating these areas. For the location and price, it can’t be beat.

I got sent here after getting kicked out of my other hostel (which was a fairly nice place). The street outside the hostel is fantastic. Restaurants, bars, cinemas, a market right next door. The hostel itself, however, is less than great. Nothing absolutely horrible. Maybe less than average cleanliness. The rooms were decent. The bar downstairs was small but seemed nice. But like most hostels in Paris it just too overpriced for what you recieved in return. The worst thing was that you have to put in a deposit for sheets which you get back when you check out. But reception doesn't open until 8am so if you have to leave early you lose your money. They were obsessed with time in this place. Opening, closing, check-in, etc. Quite humorless about their lock-out policy.

no no no and no. i did not like this place at all. My friend and I stayed here two nights in a 6-person (i think) room. Granted, the location was wonderful and pretty convenient and on a really neat street, but that was all it had going for it. The staff were cold and not very helpful, nor were they accomodating. The lockout was highly unconvenient and seemingly didn't get much cleaning done because the bathrooms were always pretty gross. And the 1am curfew was also highly inconvenient. There are no elevators, and lugging a million pound bag up 3 flights of winding stairs isn't fun when you are a small girl. There were no places to lock our luggage up, as were there no sheets which you have to rent. The people who stayed here were either very uptight and rude or very young teenagers who were loud and stumbling. The latter wouldn't bother me so much if there were a common room where these people could hang out, but there isn't, so instead they have to hang out on the stairs. Too bad Paris has a limited amount of decent places to stay, because this certainly isn't one of them.

I read all the negative reviews about this hostel, but I went anyway, because the location was just great. There is a cheap creperie place and a grocery store, within a few steps from the hostel, so saving money on food was easy, while staying there. The kitchen was all right. They have a microwave, stove, oven, and refrigerator. The staff, though, were not very friendly. If you take away one baguette from the breakfast as a snack later, you get ragged on by the staff. Curfew at 1am and lockout between 10am and 4pm really sucked. The people who stay at this hostel can be quite loud and drunk. It's probably because of the curfew that people stay and make noises there. On weekends, a DJ may spin music in the reception area, and the music can travel up a few floors, which sucked if you are trying to sleep. The key is to bring ear plugs, because the streets outside can also get quite loud. The showers are disgusting in the morning, so take your showers in the evening, right after they have been cleaned, if possible. I am convinced that the beds never get clean. That is why there are bed bugs there. When I stayed there, I paid attention to the bed crumbs on someone's bed, the day she was checking out; and sure enough, after the bed was made up, the crumbs were still there. Whatever you do, make sure your bed sheets cover everything, including your pillow, to avoid bed bug bites.

The only thing going for this place is the location - it is in a great part of town, close to bars, restaurants and lots of yummy creperies. I got a private double room and it was a mattress on a floor. The moment we walked in, we wanted to leave right away. Our tiny window looked straight into the hostel next door, so there was no privacy. The pillows were disgusting, there was a little sink in the corner and that was all the room there was. The only bright side is that the room was so awful that it forced us to see more of the city, because we didn't want to be in the room.

I was in Young and Happy last January with three friends of mine. We stayed there for 5 days during our trip to Paris. In a few words I can say that all of us considered the hostel ok. Its most important feature is the location. What a place! There's everything you need, from supermarkets and restaurants to post offices and pharmacies. It is also very close to the Metro station, which you can reach in just a few steps. Regarding to the hostel itsfelf, it's rooms are clean, but we can't say the same about the bathrooms. There is hot water in the shower, but also some hair on the floor. The bread in the breakfest is deliciousos, but if you ask for another piece, the answer will be: NO! He will offer you just "more chocolat!"- in french, sure. The newspapers are all from England. THe most curious situation happened once in the night, when I was woke up with a big noise from the fire alarm. The guy in the reception with a mustache does not know any information (like dates and tickets) about any soccer matches in the city. A friend of us, Giga Ghelman, wouldn't manage to stay there because the rooms roof is very, very, very KATAN!

We booked to stay here for 3 nights, however when we arrived they only charged us for the first 2 and said that we would have to pay again later for the 3rd night as they never took bookings for more than 2 nights, despite us having reserved a thrid night prior to arrival. If you didn't remember to reconfirm before 9pm that day, your room was given to soemone else. As for our room, it was tiny, you could only just walk past the bunkbeds to get to the window. The blankets on the bed were dirty and smelly, the upper bunk did not seem at all secure, and the lock on the door didn't work properly. The view was lovely, as we faced out into a lively cobbled street, but not enough to save this place. There is a lock-out, and they will not let you stay beyond this time!! We had missed the curfew so we had stayed out all night, only to be thrown out a couple of hours later even though we had booked the room for the next day. we ended up staying at a friend's flat instead. There are cheaper, nicer hotels in Paris, and its worth forsaking the area for somewhere more pleasant to stay. Avoid.

Yuck! The Young & Happy Hostel was the nastiest hostel I have ever been in. When we arrived, the staff would not honor our reservations for a two-bed room (confirmed only 10-12 hours earlier) because they were saving the room for someone else. Go figure. Everything was dirty. The pillows were the most discusting, drooled on, floor mopped pillows ever. The beds were foam with body indentations from the thousands of people who'd slept on them - very uncomfortable. It reeked of smoke and the noise was awful, which was from the all-nighters (who belonged in a bar or club since they weren't there to sleep, thanks to the curfew). My friend got locked in a bathroom stall. The one morning we dared to eat the food, we found there was no breakfast left during breakfast hours. Like everyone is saying, the location is great, but I still would NEVER stay there again.

Ok, the hostel is in one of the best spots in Paris, but this is all. The staff was not really nice, the rooms weren't clean and the breakfast was a deception... And coming home before 2am was also a bad thing. But if you want to stay in the neighboorhood full of bars, cafes, really close to touristic place as Notredame, Luxembourg and Pantheon, this is your hostel!

I had a good time here, although the place itself is a bit crap. Rooms are pretty small and the showers are rather malicious with water pressure that feels like needles. Breakfast is included in the price, 20 euros, and is basic bread with butter and jam, coffee and tea. All except one staff member was really great and the guy that owns the place is an absolute character. The best thing about this place is the location, its close to a lot of things and also the métro stop, plenty of inexpensive places to eat if you don't feel like cooking, a fairly cheap internet place up the road, supermarkets next door and down the hill.As this place is cheaper than many hostels in Paris I would say that its worth the rather shabby surroundings.
