Avignon is lovely, this place is located just over the bridge so it has really nice surroundings.I stayed in the dormitory accommodation. Its reasonably clean but getting old. There is a central shower facility (maybe 4 showers on my level for females). Although I did not like the fact that none of the dorm rooms lock. So anyone can wander into anyones room. Lockers were not supplied either.A few younger school groups arrived which made my stay a little less enjoyable.Saying all this the place was reasonably cheap, so you cant complain.

I can't complain about the rooms at all. Ok, they were dark and a little dirty, but you don't have to spend too much time inside. The city is only one bridge away and offers great culture and many nice cafés. In the evening you can have a drink in the hostel/campground café or right at the Rhône river and enjoy the view. For a short stay, this hostel is a great choice

We stayed for five days and it was okay -- reasonably priced for what's offered. This place has the best view of Avignon from its entrance, it was very cool walking past that every day.The sanitary facilities were fine but weirdly divided up so you'd often have men freely wandering into the women's area. This bugged me because experience teaches that this can lead to Noises and I'd rather shower in peace, thank you.The shop sold the usual expensive water that passes for orange juice and if you want fresh bread, get there early!

Not one backpacking experience is complete without a night or two in an incredibly bad hostel. This was mine. I had been backpacking for over 2 months before coming here, and did so just because I had to stay in Avignon (long story) and because it's the only one in town.Pros:1. A lot can be said about the hostel itself, but they do deserve a pro for their location. Beautiful, at the tip of a park across from the city, with a remarkable view (from the hostel's front, at least) of the walled city and the Pont.Cons:1. Dirty.2. Cramped.3. Old facilities and furniture.4. Loud school groups.5. An incredible 30-minute hike from the train station. This place wins the 'Avoid at All Costs" title. Look for cheap (around 25/single bedroom) hotels around town or make a day trip.

I stayed at this campsite/hostel for only one night, so I guess I didn't get a chance to build such a bad oppinion about it like I read from other reviews. Ideally, it's located right by the river and not a bad walk from the train station. I liked the concept of it being a campsite, hostel, and hotel, it all migrates into one community. The restaurant was big, good food, and fairly big grounds. Yes, the rooms were a bit crampt, I'll give it that, but you're only in there to sleep. Again, I was there just one night, met lots of other travellers, and overall had a great time, and thought the place was quite nice.

I stayed here for 2 nights after a lot of flooding so the whole place, including me, was covered in mud. However, the room was fine, very warm as its cold in Avignon in winter, and the sheets and stuff seemed clean.I found the staff to be nice, the girl at reception speaks very good Engllish and is lovely. Bathrooms were okay although there are no toilet seats which was rather inconvenient, particularly if you're female! Showers were fine, at least there was a spot to put your stuff so it didn't get wet.The cafeteria has some food which isn't too badly priced depending on what you buy. For 10.50 a night it was okay but breakfast should be included, to buy basic bread and butter with juice its about 2 or 3 euros. They also seem to have a vast collection of (very muddy) cats, so if you're not a fan, beware.

Was toying with the idea of staying at the campsite, but as we didn't really pack tents, had to take the hostel instead. Strangely enough, the Avignon Squash courts, though recommended by Lonely Planet, wasn't recommended by the tourist office - they told me to go Bagatelle. The campsite wasn't too difficult to find, it is across the river, to the west of the walls. if I remember correctly, you take bus 11 from the post office opposite the train station, and alight after the bus crosses a bridge. The campsite is just by the side of the river, and you can see Pont St Benezet from the promenade - quite a choice location, I would say. Anyway, after making payment at the canteen, we were given receipts to stick to our bunks. We were crammed into a tiny room with four bunks. There was so little space that sometimes, someone had to leave the room just so that someone else can go out. The beds and the sheets were clean though. As for the shower and toilets - I thought they were pretty good. Each cubicle had two sections. One for you to change (it has a tiny corner shelf to put your stuff), and the other is the shower. Even though the showers were segregated, we were given a rude shock while having our shower, when a group of boisterous guys came barging into the women's shower area, and started banging on the doors, asking if it was occupied. The ****heads obviously never used a door in their lives, or they would have seen the red sign in the lock.We ignored them, and they left. There were a couple of toilets too, and though one cubicle was perpetually out of paper, but they were clean. The sinks were in a separate room, with five or six all in a row. While we liked our room-mates - a Scottish lady, an English lady, an Aussie, and a couple of sweet French lasses, we really didn't like the noisy guys outside. Not sure whether they were from the campsite or from the hostel, but they were being a nuisance. They didn't know how to speak properly, and shouted all the time. Even late at night, they were still going on, wolf-whistling, and creating a major ruckus. Our feisty Scottish room-mate gave them a real scolding before they shut up. Was there only for a night, so didn't know if the situation got better.

Bagatelle is a hostel, hotel, camp site, restaurant, and grocery on a quiet green island in the Rhone between Avignon and Villeneuve, a short walk from both towns. Bagatelle has balconies, great romantic landscaping, excellent home-cooked food, and superb prices. It's by a huge swimming pool and sports fields. Its cozy porch and luxurious terrace look onto the Rhone, the famous bridge and Palace of the Popes, and the honey-colored walls of Avignon. It's the best hostel in the world.

We stayed at the bagatelle for the whole summer and found it a fantastic base for our travels around the area. Our stuff was safe and the people were friendly and helpful.
