Positives - great location away from the centre of town (nearby forest & a stream with enormous rocks in it that are great for sunbaking on in summer); clean rooms with only 4 beds & bathroom attached; extremely generous breakfast included in price - hot & cold; cheap dinners available; within walking distance of the city (follow the path by the stream but use public transport if carrying your large backpack).

Negatives - caters to large groups of school children which means that you don't meet many other solo travellers; does have a bit of an institutional feel about it.

This large hostel is located in a park-like area on the periphery of town, several minutes walk from a bus stop for a line that leads to town and the train station. Including the bus ride and walk thereafter, expect a fifteen minute journey into the town center.

As is true with most of the German HI's, this hostel is more oriented toward serving school groups than it is for backpackers, with a schoolhouse ambience typical of the breed. The facilities are modernish and clean, with reasonably comfortable rooms and sanitary bathrooms. Everything is functional enough, but tends toward the bland and utilitarian rather than cozy or comfortable.

The worst aspect of this hostel, at least during my visit, was the staff, a group of bureaucratic types clearly not happy with their work. Customer service was obviously not a priority here.

As this is the only hostel in town, you have little choice but to stay here if a hotel isn't in your budget. Considering the unhappy staff, somewhat inconvenient location, and the school house crowds, you might wish to consider better located zimmer frei or other most costly alternatives if there is room in your budget.
