The Youth Hostel in Mannheim is really not spectacular, but ok if all you are looking for is a place to sleep and something to eat in the morning. The dorms and bathrooms are clean and the staff friendly, and breakfast is good. The hostel can be easily reached from the central train station (less than 10 min walk). A dorm bed is around 15 Euro if you are under 27.As in most German Youth hostels, the rules are rather strict: No smoking and drinking (which I appreciate), but also no showers after 10 pm, breakfast only between 7.30 and 8.30, check-out before 9. When I stayed at the hostel, there were no large groups of younger children present, but as the walls seem to carry sound pretty well, it might get a bit unpleasant if a large group is staying at the hostel at the same time as you are. But then, why would a group of pupils go to Mannheim, considering it is a rather unattractive town.

The last time I was there is about 5 years ago so accomodation can have changed for now. The guy who received me was not unfriendly but immediately started to tell me about a lot of things that were not allowed, no alcohol, no smoking, at the breakfast I was not supposed to take any food from the bar, I should wait until I was told to do so etc. etc. Rooms were okay, open showers that offered no privacy but most guest seemed to be quite relaxed about nudity. There is a large patio.
