I really like this place, its big, modern, new, clean, spacious rooms, good bar, uncomfortable seats and you've always got a chance of getting a bed here, because again it's so big.

A couple of downsides would be, its location, but its next to an S-Bahn and rail holders don't need to pay on it, so thats not much to complian about. The other downside I had was its full of tour groups, there was old and young tour groups when I was there. It was a good job I meet a few good eggs when I was there otherwise I proably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. The young ones though were mostly German school kids and they were getting served! Lucky pups! Some of the girls were dressed rather provocatively amd dancing in the same, I did my best not to look, but Mum i'm sorry I just couldn't help myself.

I would recommend this place to anyone who asked me where to stay in Berlin.

This hostel was overall very good/excellent. Facilities were very well maintained and clean. I have stayed in a lot of hostels throughout Europe, and although this may not have been the absolute best, it ranks up there.

The Cons:

- Location is a bit out of the way, however Berlin's mass transit system is pretty good and it isn't hard to get around the city. The city is so large that it will take you a long time to get to certain places no matter where you stay!

- They overbooked rooms on me twice, but acted quickly to rectify the situation. If you keep a good attitude, good things can happen!

- With about 7 floors, this place is BIG. Elevators are small and can be slow, but stairs are plentiful!

The Pros:

- Great bar with reasonably-priced beer (about 2.5 euro for a pint). They certainly make up for being out of the way by offering a good place to congregate.

- Good accomodations...beds/linens/lockers were all in great condition. Stayed in a quad both nights. One with shared facilities, one with ensuite facilities. Shared facilities were good with seperate stalls and showers. Very modern. If you can get ensuite, though, all the better!

- Free breakfast was alright...offered mainly milk, cereal, rolls, and jam/butter. But you could supplement your FREE breakfast by paying a few extra Euro for eggs (scrambled or hard-boiled), bacon, sausage, or fruit. Coffee and tea was also available for free.

- Small internet cafe was available for use, with 4 internet-ready computers. Never used it, so not sure of value.

- Lots of lounge space with television, foosball table, snack machines added to the amenities.

- The fact that it was right next to a train station made it seem closer to the city. If you had to walk any distance from the train station to the hostel it would have been an annoyance, but the fact that it is literally a stone's throw away from the loop is a pretty good thing.

I had an enjoyable stay at the Generator. I would recommend it to anyone headed to Berlin, provided they didn't mind taking the train 15-20 minutes to get where they need to go. A great hostel!

This place is loud, ugly, unfriendly, cold, uncool, and has as much character as an empty train station in a small village in Albania.

No, the train station has more character!

Big and impersonal but close to S-bahn and clean. However, we got a room on the first floor above the bar and next to the staircase-not recommended. Paper thin walls equals no sleep from all the noise.

I stayed in this hostel the very first week it opened, and stayed for about 10-days. The best thing going for it is the price at 12 euros/night. Beds were clean, bathrooms spacious, decor a bit weird with electric blues all over the place. But the worst part about the hostel is the location... Basically it is on the ring that surrounds Berlin, you have to take the S-Bahn two subway stops before you can get to the line that runs straight across the city. So getting to West Berlin can take half an hour. Since the metros shut down at night, it can be inconvenient if you're out and want to get back to the Hostel. The Generator will do in a pinch, but if you get the chance, stay someplace more central...

The hostel itself was fine, it was clean and the beds were very very comfortable. The breakfast was good and the bar had a happy hour which was not too pricey.

The only downside to the hostel was that it was overrun with German school kids who are loud and a right pain up the arse! Oh and the bar man there is only friendly if you are a young attractive female, if not forget service with a smile!

We stayed in one of the two bed rooms for two nights around the end of May 2003. The room was very narrow with little storage space. However, the bathroom does have an excellent shower. As others have pointed out, the S-Bahn is right out the back of the hostel. This has the advantage of immediate travel around Berlin, but the disadvantage of noise. The trams nearby are better for taking you into the centre of Berlin.

On arrival, we found the staff most helpful and friendly, both at reception and in the bar. The hostel provides a free continental buffet breakfast. You can also buy a hot breakfast of sausages and eggs for E4. We ate there one evening when they did a chicken breast meal (E4). It was tough but filling.

The bar is as good as the other reviewers have said. The Happy Hour is particularly good value.

This hostel has a bad location. Clean, yet lacking character. Good service. Info at front desk about Berlin. Catered towards college students. It was weird.. back to the future meets I don't know.

Only open for a year, the place is pretty shiny and new. Take advantage of happy hour at the bar. It's the only thing really happening in that neighbourhood late at night. Don't even think of trying to do you laundry here! The machines must be secondhand and old. A full wash took 90 mins and the dryer didn't work! We had to hang our clothes up, even though we paid for the full wash and dry. The dryer would go on for 2 mins and shut off. I think there were only 2 washing machines in this 600 room place. We looked and looked, but nothing. The rooms are somewhat clean, could be better. There was a stain in our room which could have been peuk or coffee. The funky blue decor is really fun and the bartender was a blast. Don't play table soccer with him, he will kick your butt! The bathroom was really nice and compact (we had a private). Beware of the food specials at the Pit Stop. The frozen pizza came with a big square slice of processed cheese on top of it...we couldn't stop laughing! The tomato sauce and noodles tasted burnt. The food wasn't that cheap and it was bad. Stick with the french fries. They need to revamp the menu...make it half-decent...instead of just bad. Better yet, go around the corner to the Kebab place at the Forum and hook up a Kebab for 2 euros. They are open late. Internet is expensive at 1 euro for 15 mins. But at least its there. I'm sure this place will get better over time. It was pretty dead when we got there in September. But they are stocked with toiletries, guidebooks and a nice patio. At least its cheap. It does back onto the S-Bahn, which can be noisy...but also convenient. Berlin is the one city you MUST do a walking tour in....and I HATE walking tours!

I was very disapointed with this hostel.

The food provided was only American style fast food. Pizza, french fries

and burgers.

Some of the staff were helpfull, but definatley NOT friendly.

The over all atmosphere of this place is quite antiseptic.

During my stay, it was literally OVERRUN by Pre-teens on a school holiday. Very few backpackers at all.
