BUG review
“Auf dem Stintfang” is a big modern youth hostel that offers a high standard of accommodation. Common areas include a large common area with a pool table, giant chess game and lots of tables with seating offering a fantastic view of the harbour. There’s also a bar and bistro (Chicago Backpackers’ Bistro) that serves meals and drinks in the evening. The hostel has 357 beds and most rooms have en suite bathrooms (only three dormitories have shared bathrooms). Like most DJH hostels, a large proportion of the hostel’s clientele consists of school groups and this focus can have a negative impact on the ambience for independent travellers (although we’re told that independent travellers are better catered for in this hostel compared with the other Hamburg DJH hostel). This youth hostel has a great location right above Landungsbrücken U-Bahn station and is easily accessible from other parts of the city.

If you're travelling in Hamburg on a budget, this is about the best place you'll get for your money. ROOMS - If you're willing to share with up to 5 other people, you will pay no more than 22euros/night. There are some new dorms which are more spacious (I stayed in 2 different rooms while I was there). As a whole rooms are clean and storage space is decent. Attached bathrooms are a plus!FOOD - Breakfast is quite alright, except that you have to wake up early. It's btwn 7-8.30AM but be there by 7.30 if you don't want long queues and too little food left. Crowds tend to be big esp. when the German high school kids are on a group holiday. I didn't go for the lunches or dinners (which you pay extra for) but I heard they're pretty alright.INTERNET - Don't use the terminals at DJH unless you're really desperate! It's 1euro for 10 minutes, which is quite ridiculous. The reception staff don't recommend it either, and they're are really helpful with suggestions about nearby internet cafes (typically 2euros per hour).LOCATION - Probably one of the best you'll get among Hamburg hostels. You get a view of the harbour - that's fine, but it's nothing fantastic. The subway station (Landungsbrucken) is right outside and it's connected to all the major lines. Public transport is really good here so you might want to get a travel card (mine cost 18euros for 3 days) and you can hop on and off the U-bahn and S-bahn and get lost as many times as you want.STAFF - Really helpful. The ones I encountered were patient and explained everything I needed to know. If you're new to the place and need suggestions about where to go, what to avoid, where to eat, they're cool. Good for a chat whenever, when you're waiting around for someone or the weather's bad and you're stuck.LUGGAGE - Storage space in the rooms are adequate if you've got an average-sized tall backpack. If you need to leave your luggage (while waiting for a late flight out or checking in early) you can use the lockers in the locker room downstairs. If checking in early it's free, but if storing after you've checked out you'll pay a 20euro refundable deposit and a 1.50euro charge.SECURITY - Like most people have commented, that's never a problem here. Key cards are used through most doors. The curfew's not too bad - from 2.00-6.30am, and their concern is that Reeperbahn (the red light district) is so close by. I don't really see the sense in that - since Hamburg is generally really safe - but if you want to stay out, find a place you can sleep over at (at least til 6am!) because it does get a bit cold - and boring - early in the morning.ETC - People here were okay, generally. My roommates were great, showed me to breakfast the first morning there, taught me to pack a free lunch etc. It's great when you encounter someone who speaks English, but I found that even those who didn't were kinda helpful. I spent one night with different roommates (high school kids) who kept to themselves, so we didn't talk at all but as a whole it doesn't get too rowdy and the noise (if any) winds down near the curfew.Lockout is from 10am-12.30pm for cleaning so it's a good idea to get your butt out by then. If you need to get back in they usually let you in at 11ish. Rooms are all single-sex here!

This place wasn't very good. The dorms for guys and girls were seperate so I had to split from my friends and got to my room with an old man snoring in it at 4pm!Then school kids were literally running the halls everywhere! Apparently guys and girls can't sleep in the same room but kids running the halls all night is okay!It was clean, breakfast was nothing worth mentioning. And it was close to the metro station meaning you come out of the metro station and climb the hill to the hostel.

First, the pro's: The location is perfectly central on top of a hill near the Landungsbruecken. The view is awesome and the Reeperbahn not far away. It's not too expencive and really clean.BUT: The curfews, check out and breakfast times are way too early. Nightlife is impossible if you have to be back at 2. Breakfast ends at 8.30 and check out at 9.30. And even if you don't check out, you can be sure to be woken up at 9.30 by some staff telling you quite harshly to leave the room immediately.I would recommend to check out the view from the platform in front of the hostel but sleep somewhere else. Hamburg's nightlife and club szene is just too good and you will never see it while you are sleeping at this hostel.

Dates stayed at hostel: December 18-20, 2004.Type of room: 6-bed single-sex dorm.Price: 18,80 per night, per bed.SUMMARY: Far more than you pay for, as another reviewer pointed out. The facilities here are very good, and there's everything here for a comfortable stay. The location is superb - a short walk (or subway ride) from St Pauli and the infamous Reeperbahn, right above the Port of Hamburg and the lively Fischmarkt, and a short U- or S-Bahn ride from the city centre. Absolutely recommended.Directions from train station: Lonely Planet suggests either the St Pauli or Landungsbruecken station, but I recommend the Landungsbruecken station as theres just less opportunity to get lost. I took the S-Bahn (lines S1, S2, or S3) to Landungsbruecken since it was free on my Eurailpass, but you can also take U-Bahn line U3 to the same station. From the station, it's easy enough - just follow the DJH signs which will take you outside the station; from there, just take the steps up (and up and up) all the way to the hostel. Lonely Planet says there are about 100 steps, but unless you have a deep-seated aversion to steps, it's honestly not that bad.ROOMS. 6 beds, arranged as three bunk beds. Each bed has its own reading light and little shelf. There is only one heater (a little problematic with everyone wanting to hang their towel on it). There are three footstools around the room, one for each bunk.SECURITY. Security is very good. There's a swipe card to enter the hostel proper, and to enter the rooms. There are tall lockers in the rooms, which are big enough to fit your backpack too.BATHROOMS. There is one basin/mirror in each room, as well as an ensuite bathroom in each room with a toilet and shower. Even better, it's a proper shower - the type with a glass door, instead of the usual scungy curtain. There are no hooks in the bathroom, so I'd recommend bringing some type of drawstring bag to hang your things from the door handle. If the bathroom's occupied (and with six people in the room, it probably will be), there are extra showers and toilets located on each floor near the stairwells. These bathrooms have hooks to hang your things on, but the showers aren't that great (one of the ones on my floor would only run water if you kept one hand on the button) but they're OK if youre in a hurry and don't want to wait.BREAKFAST. Standard fare (bread rolls, cold meat, cheese, cereal, etc), with very good extras (eg, fruit, salad, yoghurt for cereal, and a hot chocolate machine).INTERNET. There are terminals downstairs in the common area, but these are pretty expensive. There is an internet café very close to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) at Adenauerallee 10 which is smoky, but its a bargain at 0,99 euro per hour.LINEN. Sheets and doona provided. Guests are required to make their own beds.LOCATION. Very close to the S-Bahn station at Landungsbruecken. There are also great views over the nearby Port of Hamburg, and its close to the Port and the fabulous Fischmarkt. STAFF & CHECK-IN. Very pleasant. Staff are also fluent in English. Check-in is after 12:30pm, and you cant leave your luggage in a luggage room if you arrive earlier than that.FACILITIES. I stayed in 18 hostels over this trip, and the common room/dining area here was probably one of the best ones. The décor is very modern, with a giant chessboard set out on the floor, and pool tables and TV rooms available. There is a small bistro which always has a decent number of people in it, and a buffet available for dinner which is decent value (5 euros for a meal, a salad, and fruit). There is no elevator in the building.PEOPLE. Good mix of German- and English-speaking people. It was quite busy, even when I was there in winter, so it isn't hard to meet people.

This place is clean, clean like a hospital, or dentist's office... and about as much fun. Not interesting. Impersonal. A curfew that is waaaaay too early. Not a good place to meet like minded travellers. Often a lot of European school groups stay here on organized trips.

Everything you'd expect and more from a big hostel in the centre of a large modern city. The staff are really friendly and helpful, great location in a park( don't bother to worry it's well lit at night, no problems )- with Reeperbahn, St. Mike, Elbe tunnel, Fischmarket and a big!! stone monument to Otto Von Bismark all on your doorstep. I don't think I would describe the hostel as being on top of a mountain but it is elevated - (it's only one set of stairs up and not the never ending kind) this is the price you pay for the great view over the harbour, but on the upside walking downhill first thing in the morning isn't a bad thing. The station serving it -Langdunsbrucken is well connected.(will get you to rathaus, museums, shops, alsters, intercity train/bus stations in 5/10 minutes). You get a very big locker in your room to store all your stuff. The dorm rooms are grand but remember to ask for a bottom bunk( which is the last thing on your mind when you're checking in ) if you're planning on going on a pub crawl some night.(getting into a top bunk at 2 in the morning and trying not to wake up your fellow roomates while your absolutely hammered is a tall task for any person) Shower, toilets availible to all although you might have to walk all of 5 metres across the hall if your room doesn't have an ensuite.( the horror! )Breakfast (included in price) is full on with cheese, meats, cereal, yoghurts, coffee, fresh bread ... make up some sandwhiches while you're eating breakfast and that's lunch sorted too. There was a security lock out from 2 - 6:30(if I remember right) which can be a bit crap but the staff are cool and arrangements can be made if you're nice about it. The place is very professional and you can be completley relaxed about your security here. The atmosphere can be a bit dull for some - (it isn't an all night party kind of place with the staff, but is as what's expected with big hostels in major cities that are affiliated to HI) but there are lots of people here to meet and go out on the town with. If you like your hostels with an edge of dodgyness and danger ( I don't know if it's even a proper word so I'm not apologizing for the spelling )and you get your thrills from never quite knowing if your roommates will have knicked your stuff and done a runner by the time you wake up in the morning then don't come here.

Very new hostel which was clean and nice inside. Unfortunately at the top of a mountain and in the heatwave in august this is not fun. Be prepared for some fantastic queues in summer when the hostel staff (all 2 of them) love to take their time. Be early for breakfast, and dont trust a vending machine to give you what it says it will...

This hostel has a great location, nearby the U- and S-bahn. There are some homeless people hanging around at the station, and it could be dangerous at night in Hamburg. The rooms are clean, with showers in some rooms, a sink and a toilet. I slept in a 6-bedded dorm, was quite OK. The scenery was very nice, I could see the harbor. There is a lockout from 2 till 5 AM, not very cool if you would like to hang around in the famous Red Light District nearby. There are magnetic keycards which make less noise then regular keys. Very thight security in the hostel, you have to pass through 2 extra "locked" doors before you can enter your room. The breakfast is good, but only till 8 AM, so make sure you get up in time!

Nice clean place, very well organised staff, great security and good breakfast. Easy to find, good view from front and easy to find. Not a lot of character, but plenty of people staying to get to know.
