BUG review
The main A&O hostel in Hamburg is a massive affair with over 1000 beds in 240 rooms on seven floors. There are a lot of common areas, although that’s essential for a hostel of this size. The hostel’s facilities include a bar next to the reception with internet access (€2.50 per hour; Wi-Fi €1 for one hour, €1.5 for two hours, €5 for one day and €8 for seven days); a games room with table football and a pool table; a breakfast room (€4 for a buffet breakfast that includes meat and cheese) and another bar in the basement (the Astra Bar). Accommodation is in three, four, six, eight and 10-bed dormitories, all with en suite bathrooms plus a reading light and a locker for each bed. On the down side, the mattresses are thin and this hostel caters for lots of groups (mostly school groups) which has a really negative effect on the hostel’s atmosphere. In short, it is a clean and well-maintained hostel with a good range of amenities, but it doesn’t have the sort of atmosphere that is conducive to meeting other travellers.
