Dates stayed at hostel: December 20-21, 2004.

Type of room: 2-bed "dorm".

Price: 17,50 per night, per bed.

SUMMARY: A fairly small and old-ish looking hostel, but the bathrooms are newly renovated. The place was fairly quiet when I was there in winter, so I had an enjoyable stay with a room all to myself - however, the rooms are quite small and the lockers aren't lockable, so I imagine these might become issues when the hostel is busier. The location, however, is perfect, and it's comfortable enough for the price you pay. All in all, I would say this is a passable hostel with some good things (bathrooms, location, only 2 beds per dorm) and some bad things (unlockable lockers, and cramped rooms).

Directions from train station: The hostel is within easy walking distance from the train station. Follow the crowds (or your map) from the train station to the Holstentor, that big squat Disney-esque gate perched near the Trave River. Go past the Holstentor, and turn left onto the road running along the river (An der Undertrave). After you turn left onto An der Undertrave, the hostel is on Mengstrasse, which should be the fourth street on your right. The hostel is on the right hand side.

ROOMS. 2 beds, arranged as one bunk bed. The room is fairly small. Beds are unassigned, and have their own reading lights. There was one big heater in my room, as well as a table and chair.

SECURITY. Rooms are lockable. There is a "locker" in each room, which is big enough for a backpack, but you can't actually lock it or secure it any way (as far as I could tell).

BATHROOMS. There is a basin/mirror in each room. In the female bathroom down the hallway, there is one toilet and one shower - the bathroom is modern, and looked newly renovated when I was there. The only problem I had with the shower was that the light was operated by a motion detector, and it turned off whilst I was showering (and needed a bit of flailing to get it back on).

BREAKFAST. Standard fare (sliced bread or bread rolls, cold meat, etc). No juice available.

INTERNET. None.

LINEN. Sheets and doona provided. Guests are required to make their own bed.

LOCATION. Good, not far from the train station, Holstentor, and city centre. Just down the road from the Marienkirche.

STAFF & CHECK-IN. Staff here are not bad. There was renovation going on whilst I was there, so there was a bit of construction-type noise during the day, but it didn't disturb me. I'm not sure what time check-in is, but I arrived not long after 10am, and was allowed to check in and go straight up to my room.

FACILITIES. Reception area is small, and there isn't really any common room to speak of (unless you count the room where we take our breakfast, and I don't). There is no elevator.

PEOPLE. The hostel was fairly empty when I was there in December. Mainly German-speaking people.

RESERVATIONS. The hostel takes reservations by email. After you make an enquiry, they will ask you to send another email to confirm your reservation and make the reservation binding.

Stayed here in summer 2004. The place was cleaner than my own home sometimes :) Great service for a normal price. Breakfast can keep you fed well until noon :) Frequent trains to Hamburg (less than one hour), so if you cannot find a place to stay in H., this would be a good choice.

lubeck is a pretty town situated 60 kilometres from hamburg. the hostel is only a 5/10 minute walk from the train and bus station. i would highly recommend this hostel if you are getting a ryanair flight from lubeck airport. we got a private 4 bed room which was very clean- linen and towel is provided. we woke up to a superb breakfast of many different types of german breads, cheese, meats, salads, vegetables, olives, feta cheese, fruit, yogurt, cereal, nutella, coffee, chocolate, teas...lovely.the only drawback was the lack of laundry facilities and guestkitchen- however, the breakfast and cheap restaurant food in the surrounding town area made up for this. there is no curfew and other facilities such as cheap drinks machines. highly recommended!

All the youthostels from small towns are better then the ones from big cities.this one is no exception.

I'ts clean and the larger rooms are for 6 people.

It's located in the old town and they serve a great breakfast!

I would stay there again.
