Chris will tell u as soon as u arrive that u will never want to leave, u may not believe him at first but it's too true. i went there for the first time in late june and i didn't leave until i ran out of money. it's cheap (7euros now and when u stay a week u get 1 nite free). the atmosphere is the best, tons to do (a river hike, one rock beach the best i've been to by far, cliff jumping, several remote mountain towns to hike to). great place to make friends from all over tha world, and party as much as u like, than recoperate under the pretty lemon trees. hope i see u all there~

Those five words sum the place up pretty well. There's quite a few things to see on Crete, and lots of beaches and areas to explore around Plakias. It's hard to imagine a better base or simply hang-out spot than this. There's Chris, who is very friendly and relaxed while also efficient. There's the beautiful, sunny grounds, fun people, communal dinners, big free laundry sinks and tubs with large clotheslines out in the sun, and a communal fridge. Chris has village wine and bottle beer in the fridge, and cooks small breakfasts, and maintains a decent internet connection. You pay 6 euro when you arrive, for your first night, and then you run a tab until you leave. (There's now an ATM in town) There's never any reason to leave, though, and that's why so many people keep coming back.

Had a ball in the Plakias hostel. Management are brilliant, the guests are friendly, the facilities are clean and new, and the gardens are tidy and shady. Everything is well organised, yet the hostel itself has a casual laid back atmosphere. While I was there it was a quiet time in the season, of the 20-25 guests there probably about a quarter had been there before, and quite a few stay for the long term. There is no kitchen facilities but eating out in the town shouldn't cost you more than 5 euro, and there is a fridge for guests. There is a bar with ample stocks of cheap local wine, and a great music selection. All in all this was a great hostel, though I must admit the other guests were the best thing about the hostel by far. A brilliantly run, clean, cheap hostel in a gorgeous quiet costal town.
