We arrived at Thessaloniki Youth hostel (Svolou st) only to find out that it was permanently closed. Fortunately we discovered that a new hostel had just opened up, making our life much easier. "Backpacker's Refuge" as they call it, is a flat with dorms that is substituting the non-existing hostels. It is run by the sister of a devoted backpacker, and is kept as clean and tidy as a home can get. There are no facilities other than a washing machine and a t.v. but it is an absolute bargain for 15 Euros. The only drawback is that you must contact them before you arrive so they can arrange to meet you, but Anna can make this a smooth process. Email them at backpackers_refuge@hotmail.com
