I was there three days before, despite of reading all this bad comments about this hostel. when I arrived at one o clock I had to walk up in a dark and narrow starcase to the third floor. The hostel and both dormitories were open, but a sign informed, that the reception will not open until 19:00 (all the days). I saw no locker. The place mad a bad impression, a sick looking older man, was the only person I saw. He told me, that the bathroom (two floors deeper) is closed till the reception opens. - That was enough, I left ;-)

Spiders in the showers and sleepless nights, December 23, 2005

I was sleeping in Thessaloniki youth hostel for 4(!!!) nights. I went to Thessaloniki because of one kind of political stuff for 5 days... And when I arrived to this "hostel" I knew what to wait because I had read these comments..

Luckily I was with my friends: not lonely suffering. Filthy sheets and walls, mould on floors and rust in the showers(yeah, and the spiders in the showers too). Because of our timetables, the owner was informed to keep the showers open all the time. So, imagine going to a very filthy basement at 5.30 am having a shower with the spiders...alone, when it's still dark outside. The door downstairs is always open, anyone could have come there. I just cried and smoked in chain during the first night of my stay, because I was so afraid about getting ill, being robbed etc... And, which was most ironic, was the sign on the walls: "For your own safety, don't leave your valuables to the rooms. Please leave them in the office." What kind of person really does that?!

The beds were uncomfortable and hard and the pillows were hard too. I couldn't sleep 'cos of the noisy streetlife: we couldn't close the windows properly, and of course then it was very cold too.

I really do not recommend this youth hostel to anyone. I'm sure you can get a better room by paying about 5-10 euros more than this horrible 13 euros for pure hell in Thessaloniki youth hostel.

But, if you still decide to go there, take a sleeping bag with you(and a sweater too, because of the cold nights during winter time). Because the owner just emptys rubbish bins, he doesn't do the beds at all. And he really is very rude.

I can only agree with the others: don't ever go there. I'm an Ersamus- student, I was LIVING there for 5 days till I got a flat and this fucking old man who runs it wanted to throw our suitcases out of the window, just because we came in the evening and told him, that we'll pay later, if we don't find anything. Good start for beeing here. But it was typical for that city as far as I know now...

It was the worst hostel I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I went there in August 2002, we arrived late at night, everything smealt terribly, it was increadibly dirty: the blankets, the floors, but the smell was the fact that made us leave, although it was 1 am and we had nowhere to go. We actually found a double hotel room (modest but clean) at only 18 euros (most are at around 20-25).

The hostel is actually an apartment on the fifth floor of a block of flats, the barhrooms are in the basement, and there was no light functioning there, there are separate dorms for boys and girls.

DON'T GO THERE!

(but if you go to Athens we friendly recommend Annabel Hostel, near Omonia Square)

This "youth hostel" is defenitely the most horrible place I have seen on my trip. I wanted to see Thessaloniki for one day, but when I arived there at night coming from Istanbul, no beds where free, although I had called them during the day. Noone from the hostel was there, all doors where open and I had to sleep on the floor. The bathroom has not been cleaned for decades, dirt everywhere, the dustbin for the toilet paper was more than full. It was disgusting. It's a shame for the IYHF, that this crappy flat is using their logo. If you want to see Thessaloniki, invest the money for a cheap hotel!! Dont give 10 Euro per night to those bastards!!! I left in the early morning to Athens without paying.

Too expensive! 10 Euros in main season (august)! You can get a real hotel for 20 Euros double room!

Dirty!!! Just on bathroom (1 lavabo 1 toilet) for about 20 people. showers (or what ever it is)in the cellar! You can't lock the room. And the best: we asked to stay for two nights; staff wanted to know if we're sure!

I found myself in this place on my way back from Istanbul with 4 other friends, when we missed the train and had to find a place to stay. We called around 23:30 and were only given a 20-min limit to get there. We finally arrived at 01:00, the owner was absent. We just got in, turned on the lights, settled wherever we found (2 of us in the girls dorm) and tried to sleep. Blankets were smelly, showers closed and everything simply looked filthy. We left at 07:00 without paying and nobody noticed. Didn't even look like a place where we could have made a loot...

In a nut shell the staff stole my digital camera, along with US$250 i foolishly left in my room whilst visiting the very dirty bathroom for a minute.

I am certain it was the staff as i was just picking up my bags before leaving and there was only one staff member there and no other guests. Take everything with you if you do stay there. It's a dive anyways so dont even bother.

As the other reviews say just pay the extra and get a half decent room where they may actually change the linen and clean the facilities.

I suggest simply paying the extra cash and getting a hotel room. During my two night stay there I noticed that no keys were handed out (as other hostels do) and instead everything is open all the time. This means that anyone can walk in at anytime and take anything as there is rarely anyone on staff watching over things. I foolishly thought that, despite these obvious warnings, my belongings would be safe. My passport was stolen and no help was to be found. What's more is that, while I have stayed at much worse places, this hostel is hardly clean. As far as I know they do not wash or change the sheets after a customer leaves-- they merely remake the bed. As for the shower and toilet: well... use your imagination.

Recommend staying max one night on your way to, say, one of the Peninsulas on Halkidiki (I think it's about half way between the train station and the Halkidiki bus station) or heading down to Katerini or Mt Olympus and the rest of Greece, or up towards Bulgaria. Also if you have to wait until the next day or so for a ferry. The showers are damp and muddy: bring flip flops (thongs). And they are usually cold unless you can get there before anyone else. The toilet is evil and nasty. Make sure you have a sleeping bag or sleep sheet because nothing is provided and it is questionable when the mattress covers were last washed, if ever (same with the floors). There is an all girls dorm. The location is convenient, but noisy, and try not to get the bunk shoved in the entrance area or you'll have no privacy. Lock up your valuables. I paid 9 euros in September 2002 and compared to other budget accomodation in Greece, for what you got (or didn't get) (in terms of cleanliness, ambience, service, amenities, and everything else you expect from a backpackers), it was very expensive. If there was another hostel in the city, I would stay there instead. Unfortunately as far as I can see, there are no other options.
